Any deer hunters out there...

They used to only have shotgun with slugs here, and this is the 3rd year that rifle is allowed. I grew up in rifle country so its very weird to me that my DH is still learning how to hunt with a rifle.

why did the state change its mind?

Wow I didnt now there was so many other deer hunters on this forum.

IDK. Maybe they grew a brain? Really tho, in this area, shotgun is safer for the people, even if its harder to bag your deer. There is so little land to hunt on that the "Citiots" all come up and jam in there shoulder to shoulder and someone ALWAYS gets shot. DH was shot at by a moron who was shooting from the road into our private corn field. He could feel the bullets whizzing by him, and they were hitting our buildings in the yard. There was some chasing down of the morons and some "this rifle will hurt where Imma stick it." talk. If everyone was smarter and there was more room rifles would make more sense. We hunt on our own land ONLY (scared to go on public land with the Citiots) and I like having my rilfe for distance shots.... we manage our space well for the 3 of us using it and no one is in danger.

Idk why we have no rifles there is so much land and not that many houses. but that citiodts is very funny we get a lot of them where we are and I never had a word for them till now. Thanks for the expression.

I grew up in northern WI.

Started deer hunting with dad at 12 years old. Poor guy ended up with 5 daughters and 0 sons. It wasn't so bad for him though- he got 4 fishing buddies and 2 hunters out of the pack.

I hunted with dad every year, right through college. Then I moved across the state, got married, and started hunting on my own land. I miss hunting with dad.

My biggest was an 8 point, the antlers are on the wall in my sewing room. The best was my first, a huge doe and I dropped it with one shot. Dad was so excited! and proud! we stopped at all the cabins and he told the tale over and over. That memory still makes me smile.

Now, that I live in Wyoming, I haven't had a chance to go out and hunt deer yet (fyi - I was informed that ELK are not DEER

).
Hubby has gone out after deer with the neighbor a couple of times but hasn't gotten anything yet. Muley's are a whole different animal than whitetails.

Made it out for elk season last year for the first time, but never saw anything but other hunters. The weather was too warm and the elk hadn't migrated down from the high mountains. To top it off, the Game and Fish changed the rules and made it any elk on a general tag, so we were shoulder to shoulder hunters for the opening weekend.

Well the hubby got a really nice 11 point last year. Not very wide, but really really tall. It is at the taxidermist. Now I am temped to go back out hunting just to see if I can bag a bigger one. We are very competitive with each other. I usually roll into WV hunting camp about 3-4 days into the season and start butchering. I haven't been hunting in years, I just let my hubby and his huge family do the shooting. I usually butcher 10-15 deer a year between WV and PA hunting seasons. I bought an old slicer last year and made the best jerky I have ever had. I will usually spend a couple of months making jerky. The only thing that gets thrown out with our deer is the skull and spine. Everything else is used for us, the dogs, pigs and the hides are sold.

Glad to see some other hunters!
I've been hunting since I was a kid. I am an only daughter and have always been on my Dad's heels. So, naturally hunting and fishing became a passion of mine. Hubby didn't really get into hunting until after we got married. I took a nice 8 point last year with my rifle. November is our "vacation" time as a family and we head to our camp for rifle season. We spend as much time as possible hunting. Here at the house we see deer all the time. Hubby saw 2 very nice bucks this morning on our road. I saw a yearling while I was taking the kids to the bus stop this morning. We have some nice woods behind our house where the deer travel. Perfect for bowhunting which I cannot do right now. I sprained (or broke) my shoulder a little while back and I'm have some trouble with it and some arthritis in my elbow. Now that school has started I know it won't be long before we'll be getting ready for hunting season. Gotta start getting ready for it. Lot of hard work and effort but I love being in the woods. It's nothing for us to hike 15 miles (roundtrip) of WV mountains each day. Motorized vehicles aren't allowed where we hunt. Makes for a long trip. But once I get into my stand I'm contented. There's nothing like being in the woods looking and listening for the slightest motion or sound.

Nothing like a WV chipmunk to make you sit up and pay attention. A bear walking through the woods doesn't make as much noise as a WV Chipmunk!!!
