I have a question for all the Hawaii people. What material do you guys like best (if any) for the bedding in the coop/run/nesting boxes?
I have been using wood chips that we make with a wood chipper. So far it has worked well.

We use a sand base and wood chips over that. Clean out twice a month.I have been using wood chips that we make with a wood chipper. So far it has worked well.
I use straw. So far it hasn't molded or gotten really gross. I only replace it once a month.
Thanks! That's my worry about using straw cause mildew and mold is a problem where I live.
In my covered coop/run I use woodchips; a store bought and home-chipped mix plus some Korean Natural Farming IMO products.... We've been taking the deep-litter approach which has worked surprisingly well, given that we are in super wet Puna district on Big Island. I haven't cleaned out our 100 sqft run (which houses seven chickens) in three months: Zero smell, zero flies. It looks like we're actually building soil under the run at this pointgreat if you garden!
@zephyricle the chick is doing good, wife and daughter named it Coco after hearing how you found it.![]()
