Hello
My 7 month old Silkie started laying last month, I’m not sure if she began laying too young.
She laid an egg last night and was fine this morning she was fluffed up and it looked like her breathing was laboured with her tail up and down, she wouldn’t eat and her crop had not fully emptied. I rushed her to the vets but my chicken vet is away on holiday. When I first got these silkies they came with mycroplasma and I lost one, this girl has had a sneeze every since that my chicken vet was not concerned about.
The vet said she thought maybe she had an impacted crop or a respiratory infection. I asked if it could be egg related and she felt inside and said she felt an egg that was going to be laid and not to worry.
Since coming home she’s been lying down a lot and having researched I’m worried she’s egg bound. I can feel something hard in her abdomen but not if I feel in the vent (although I’ve only felt in an inch as I don’t want to hurt her). I’ve given her 2ml of calcium and 2 hot Epsom salt baths, alongside the 0.6ml of metacam and the tylan vet said to use. She’s perked up and is eating but her vent is still pulsating and there is no sign of the egg.
Is there anything else it could be other than egg bound and if not anything else I can do to help her ? I’m a bit worried we’ve had a heatwave and the girls refused to eat so had watermelon, lettuce etc so not their usual calcium supplements also one of the girls is broody so I’ve been having to shut the nest box for 3/4 hours a day otherwise she won’t eat and I wonder if my girl held on for too long.
I’ve got an appointment back at the vets in the morning but I’m not sure what they can do.
Any advice would be very much appreciated
