The cake was good but the texture was odd. I need to check into the amount of butter in it since it seemed a bit too much.

I will try the cake again after I check the proportions.

Interesting. Texture is a big deal, hope you get that figured out since the taste is good. If not, well, not all recipes are keepers, right? Thanks for trying it out!

So... My son wants Tiramisu for his birthday, and I thought I would give it a try.

Before I have even started, I made a mistake, I sent my husband out for the Kahlua. He cam back with rum and Kahlua, a HUGE bottle of it.
He refuses to read labels.

He is unobservant -and He should know this by now, and start reading labels, after all the years of accidentally buying decaf coffee and then getting angry at the manufacturer because it looks the same as regular. (I doesn't

)
He opened up a can of stewed tomatoes one morning and poured the liquid into his coffee because he thought it was evaporated milk.
He was mad because the labels should not allowed to be so similar... the tomatoes on the label should have given it away.

Anyway.. I do not do the liqueur store thing... do they take returns?
Is Tiramisu alright with rum Kahlua?
I do not want to spent all this money on something that will be disappointing.

This site and recipe says that you can substitute instant coffee and rum for kahlua, so rum kahlua should be fine in the recipe:

http://www.italian-dessert-recipes.com/best_tiramisu_recipe.html

What can I substitute for the Kahlua?

Try the following:
  • 1/3 cup STRONG coffee plus 2 Tbsp of rum
  • 1/3 cup water 2 Tbsp of instant coffee crystals
  • 1/3 cup VERY strong coffee dripped and reduced
  • 1/3 cup of Tia Maria
  • OR - try espresso powder it makes a quick instant espresso! (I use this product A LOT!)

Thank you.
I read one recipe hat called for two tablespoons rum, but I do not know how much rum is in the rum Kahula... The mascarpone cheese is my hesitation. I would give it a go if It wasn't for the difficulty of finding the cheese. I was disappointed in how few places carry it.

I am sure he will eat anything and love it, but I hate the idea of botching it.

Someone--Wynot perhaps, made their own Kahula. I may do that next year.

marscapone cheese is expensive, too. Here is a good substitute:
16 oz cream cheese
1/3 cup sour cream
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

blend all together
in my area finding the lady fingers is harder

Sorry, I can't seem to read further than him pouring stewed tomato juice into his coffee...
