I am thinking of making the Cheddar Bread recipe that @ronott1 posted (it is in the index).
BUT, I don't have buttermilk at home.
Does anyone else substitute regular milk mixed with a tablespoon of acid (lemon juice or vinegar) for buttermilk in recipes?
Not quite the same as buttermilk, but it works in a pinch.
I did until last year when I discovered powdered buttermilk.

Table spoon of vinegar or lemon juice per cup in the recipe.

yogurt works great as a sub for buttermilk too
