Ooh, Jared, good thing you had your phone with you! Sometimes I forget to take mine with me. Is your gate latch like this?

If it is, you can attach a wire to the hole in the end of the part that lifts the latch and run it through the fence to the inside of the coop (or run, as the case may be). Then if you get stuck inside you just pull on the wire to lift the latch and bam, you're out!

Yep, that’s the exact one we have. I’m gonna take your advice. It was really frustrating getting stuck in there, but at the same time I was glad to be with my chickens and help them through their traumatic experience a week ago.
