Any Home Bakers Here?

Over here a Dutch oven means to pull the sheets over someone's head and pop off trapping them with the lovely odour. I never knew why Dutch people got blamed for that one, had no idea it was a real piece of cookware.

The "what am I missing out on?" Brought out the five year old in me ;-). I shall grow up now.
I thought it was something like that!

We can often get into trouble with cultural differences--I have seen it happen on the Australorp thread sadly....Caused hurt feelings and they left the thread.

I'm sure the moderators would want us to make it perfectly clear we are not endorsing roasting people from Holland ! Seriously, a dutch oven is perfect for cooking on a fire outdoors. My brother built an outside pizza oven, and we donated the dutch oven for dishes other than pizza. My only downside with it was it can't be used on a glass stovetop.

Really? That's a pity, I think when you are talking in text you always have to give the other person the benefit of the doubt, humour doesn't always translate, especially people who have that tongue in cheek or sarcastic sort of humour.

Well you have all spurred me on, off to cook a coconut cake. Family loves it and so do I. One from the woman's weekly cookbook and they always have the best recipes :)

Thanks!

I have saved the recipe-- will need to get a couple of ingredients like coconut essence and break out my scale but it looks like a very good recipe.

@appps that is too funny about the "Dutch oven"! I'm in my little office room laughing and DH wanted to know what was up, so of course I had to share. Now we're both laughing.

@sunflour the fried apple pie was delicious, thanks for fixing me up with one! And such a pretty place setting...are those really old dishes? Very pretty!

You're welcome. Yes they are old, they were the pattern I picked out when DH & I got married 100 years ago

Actually now you mention it I've never remembered to buy the coconut Essence and just make it without. Still yummy :)

And then I got sidetracked anyway because I had some cream was closer to it's expiry date than the sour cream so I decided to try this cream cake recipe my uncle gave me when I went looking for old family recipes. So far it looks great, has risen beautifully and that was in a pretty large cake tin, would be interesting to do it in a smaller, higher one.

Will have to wait for it to cool and give it the taste test. Funny recipe, no butter in it,basically just eggs and cream, vanilla and flour.
