Any Home Bakers Here?

Looks like fun!
We don't normally do anything special for Valentine's, but I suppose I could make some cookies or cake.
I usually draw a little card for DH. Now you got me thinking...

Don't you need some cookies or a cake anyway?

Ooooh, nice! Please post a picture of the cake when it's finished, I'd love to see how it turned out.

No baking (by me anyways) for Valentine's Day this year. I actually have to waitress for my youth group's Valentine's Day fundraiser, "Enchanted Evening". So I guess that's how my Valentine's Day will be spent. LOL

If I don't end up with 5 layers sliding in every direction, I'll share a picture.

Your fundraiser might be a fun way to spend the evening (even waitressing for it)!

I don't think it should slide if you use frosting/icing. If you used whipped cream, the cream might separate (in our heat it would separate) and then you'd get slipping and sliding, but if you use a firmer medium, I think it shouldn't go all "collapsey"

The frosting I'm going to use, I've made before and it should be ok. But just for insurance, I thought I'd stick 2 bamboo skewers into it and maybe attach little paper hearts or something to the top of the skewers (like little signs?).

I can just see DH slicing off a piece and the whole thing collapsing or him getting a piece of bamboo in his mouth. Nothing says "I love you" like slivers, right? lol

I don't see why they'd sell the tins if it needs structural support....

Just pile the frosting away from the edges and use a hot knife to cut it. Tell hubby it's more romantic if you slice the cake..... :D

Is anyone making/baking anything special for Valentine's Day?

I found this pan set on sale at Michael's and thought I'd make a chocolate cake, frosting the layers alternating coconut and chocolate frosting. I hope the 5 layers don't slip all over (maybe use bamboo skewers to hold it up?). Any advice in case things get slippery?

Have never tried it, but remember reading that the "pros" cool layers cakes either fridge or actually freeze and ice them cold prevents the slippage, and once back at room temp they stay in place? For the top layer, do a light spread first to sorta glue the crumbs in and let that sit so the cake crumbs don't get mixed in and mess up the pretty top layer.

Skewers and not tooth picks would work - have seen results of someone swallowing a toothpick - a deadly outcome:(

sunflour found this link for us to refer to and it gives weights for flour:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/921333/any-home-bakers-here/4290#post_16281811

(Bread flour, 1 cup = 4 1/4 oz or 120 grams)

Don't apologize for asking questions, we all learn as we go!

There are also on line resources for most items we usually measure.

A method that works for almost everything is to measure and weigh things that don't offer a proven wt - such as mustard, honey, or whatever. Do 3 test measurements and average the 3 and you use the average to build your own weight charts.

In high school I used to help out in the deli at the grocery store sometimes. The cake decorators used frozen cakes to decorate. That way it was firm when they applied all that thick icing.

Good tip on the frozen cake. I've heard that before but never tried it. This might be a good time to listen to the pros.

Okay, sounds good.

Yeah, as long as I don't get to nervous. But it definitely beats staying home and doing nothing. LOL
