Any Home Bakers Here?

I'm going to have to read up on baking at high altitudes, I've never had to learn before. The place we're going has an elevation of over 6,800'...where we are now the elevation is only about 16'. Quite a change, lol.

But yes, exciting!
For regular cooking you will want a pressure cooker. It is pretty much required when you get close to 7000ft.

For high altitude baking, you need less levening. There may be other changes too, like oven temperature.

Where in Wyoming, if you don't mind me asking?
We left Cheyenne just 1 1/2 years ago. We lived west of town at 7200 feet.

Baking - bread needs an extra rise, and the rises are shorter. Rise twice, shape and then rise a third time.

Cook times are longer, boiling water is not as hot.

The Colorado State University Cooperative Extension has a wonderful book out called "High Altitude Baking". Awesome, awesome, awesome. It has directions for elevations between 3,500 to 10,000 feet.

If you can't find a copy, let me know and I will get you copies of the recipes you need to survive.

Thanks for the pointers wyoDreamer!

We're going to be west of Cheyenne and Laramie in a tiny place called Sinclair (population about 400...plus 2!). DH has a job with the company there.

I'll take a look for that book. If I can't find it, I'll be sure to give you a shout.

Thanks again!

Sinclair is a pretty little town, at least from the interstate as we drove past. We hunted south of there near Saratoga.
Good luck on the move, but it will be a huge change from Florida...

Thanks wyoDreamer! We're ready for a change from FL so it sounds good to us!

Get ready for WIND! and DRY! I had bloody noses for a little while till I got used to the dryness.
Gardening is tough, I used a raised bed in a grow house because the "soil" is mostly decomposed granite. Think about a hoop house with plastic cover at the very least. A lot of sun, but windy and dry! greenhouse will help keep humidity up a little bit and keep the wind from stripping the leaves off your plants.

Last year we were in Denver helping my mom moved. My skin cracked like crazy. I'm going to take enough lotions to bathe in for WY.

I had to laugh a bit at DH the other day. I told him I hope our house will have a front porch (like we have now). He said we could always put up one of those nylon pergolas. Ha! The wind will be new to him.

I tried to find the High Altitude Baking book on the CSU website. There's a link to the book but then a message saying it doesn't exist. Guess they stopped printing it.

What's happening with your chickens? Do you get to take them with you?

Hi Debby! Try Neutragena hand cream, it works very well. I use it like a body lotion. It's not a very big bottle but worth the $4 at Walmart. It's unscented and it comes in a box.
