question: I went to Kroger tonight and bought some Gold Medal unbleached all purpose flour, and it came up as a restricted item and the girl had to ok the purchase, now what is it with flour that makes it restricted? I've never known flour to make drugs or bombs.

That's weird, so did a quick google: There's a recall on some of the Gold Medal flours for E Coli contamination - maybe they are checking lot numbers?

Wonder how flour can get E Coli?

I think cross contamination...I saw the tail end of that. I have a 10 lb bag sitting in my cupboard and wondering if I should throw it.

Hi ya'll. I bake...a lot...However, I just received a request to bake completely vegan cookies.... you know without eggs, milk or butter! As far as I believe, eggs, milk and butter are considered the golden ingredients in cooking - no substitutes what-so-ever. Can anyone out there help me out with a tried and true 100% vegan cookie recipe??!!??

Well, they're not cookies as such, but our chocolate crackles are a firm favourite "down under". http://www.kelloggs.com.au/en_AU/chocolate-crackles.html

If they aren't an option, look up other recipes using copha.

Other biscuits(cookies) with only butter can use oil instead, eg anzac biscuits http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/21104/anzac+biscuits use some vege oil instead of butter.

I googled vegan cookie recipes and unrefined coconut oil, melted was used instead of butter, non-dairy milk and egg replacer for eggs. I found this for egg replacement.

Applesauce

Use 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce in place of one egg in most baking recipes. Some sources say to mix it with 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. If all you have is sweetened applesauce, then simply reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe. Applesauce is also a popular healthy replacement for oil in many baked goods.

Banana

Use 1/4 cup mashed banana (from about half a banana) instead of one egg when baking. Note that this may impart a mild banana flavor to whatever you are cooking, which could be a good thing.

Flax seeds

Believe it or not, hearty-healthy flax seeds can be used as an egg substitute! Simply mix one tablespoon of ground flax seeds with 3 tablespoons water until fully absorbed and viscous. Use in place of one egg. (You can use pre-ground flax seeds or grind them yourself in a spice or coffee grinder.)

Vegetable oil

Typically 1/4 cup vegetable oil can be substituted for one egg when baking. If you are short more than one egg, you will want to try another method as any more vegetable oil may make the recipe too oily or greasy.

Water, oil and baking powder

Whisk together two tablespoons water, one teaspoon oil (like corn or vegetable oil) and two teaspoons baking powder. Use this in place of one egg. When used in cookies and other baked goods, it works so well no one would ever know.

thanks for the link, I think I will double check the lot number. Never thought of it being contaminated, usually stores just pull the product.
