Any Home Bakers Here?

I wanted black food dye for the Halloween Egg Contest and found some at a local hobby store - It does taste horrible and very salty/fishy.

But I did use it again for my current Spring Chick's eyes in the Edible Easter Contest.

If you ever get a Black Frosted Cake from a bakery - don't eat the icing - it tastes quite good but stains your teeth black for hours

Does anyone watch the Great British Baking show? I was inspired to make the Prinsesstarta a couple years ago, and just wanted to share the photo. I added cocoa powder to make the marzipan, instead of mint green coloring as is in the recipe. It was the best cake I ever made or even ever had eaten.

Very nice looking cake!

Very pretty cake! Never heard of that show before, but I don't watch a lot of tv.

I made black once, and flavored it with anise for halloween cat cookies for my son's kindergarten class. The kids that did eat them, had black teeth for the rest of the day. :)

Pretty! I love that show! I also have the master classes that tell how to make all the challenges.

Here's a more recent creation: my ginger/orange cookies, totally grain free, made with coconut flour.

Those are all so lovely

and look so, so tasty.

They were doing a special burger at KFC which came with a black bun. I asked the lady about it, how they got the colour..... I can't remember what she told me they used, but I do remember her telling me that they'd done it in Japan and used the squid ink over there, but they didn't use the squid ink here because it gives a slightly fishy taste that we probably wouldn't like. EDIT: looked it up, some sort of vegetable dye https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2016/03/kfc-has-a-pitch-black-zinger-burger/
Interesting.....I've eaten cow tongue and chicken hearts, but never squid ink...

I've considered watching since Netflix lost their Food Network contract...:rant

Squid ink? No thanks.

Agreed! Can you imagine biting into a piece of cake & having it taste like fish?

I found a black gel dye in the baking section. I don't know if it will work, or if its got squid ink in it (that would be considered a 'natural ingredient') but you can bet I'll be sniffing it before adding it to the glaze. I'm assuming from all the comments that it will probably be more like a gray on the cake, but a true black on our teeth. This should be interesting.

Thanks again for all of your help. I'll let you know how it goes.
