Any last ditch efforts you have up your sleeves?? (9-3-11 update)

Nope...no roo! She constantly pants, and is spreading her wings. It is not that hot here today. The gargae door is open, a nice breeze is blowing in.

She is acting like it is near 100 degrees. Well...unless anyone has any ideas....I am just plain out of solutions???

Edited to add, that her tail feathers are not up like they usually are, they are drooping downward??

That small scab may be bumble foot. from what I understand where ever that small scab was you'll have to squeeze all the pus out and treat that otherwise it will never get better

This is a very informative thread on how to treat it how its caused etc. from another byc member that just went through this same thing. best of luck!!

I am getting the feeling she is not doing so well......she just lays now. Just fed the other ladies a melon that a critter has been eating on, from the garden, and really looked at how bright their combs are, and deep red. Hers is light red, to almost pale pink. Panting has increased, and well.....just don't think she is going to make it?? It's just not that hot to be panting like she is. The others are not, and they are in full sun right now running around.

Not sure what to do, but will leave her in peace, asn let her rest. She has had her aspirin, and rubbed some meds on her leg and joints, and now I wait. May partially cover the crate with the towel and give her some darkness to just rest.

Thanks, will check on her in a little bit !!!

Good luck

What meds did you rub on her legs? Be sure you don't use anything with Benzocaine or any "caine" anesthetic in it, as they can be fatal to birds, as well as many aromatics like citonella.

Cynthia, can it be possible that she has an impacted egg or something that makes her limp look worse?

Not sure what could be wrong. The hanging wings and panting can be because she is in pain, not necessarily hot. Certainly, check inside her vent for a stuck egg, but sometimes, this stuff is so hard to diagnose.

I wondered about an impacted egg, as she keeps making a nest, lays down and nothing. She is up. have not seen her eat or drink though.

WTH ???? What can I do???

Can you all come over and see her, and help me? LOL I need help and don't have any more ideas?

What I rubbed on her leg and joints is a mixture of liquid DMSO, and Bigeloil. Cannot remember the mixture part to part, but it is all a liniment. Works wonders on my shoulder pain.

Active ingredients in Bigeloil is Menthol 2%.

DMSO? don't have the container any more.

Maybe try soaking her in warm water...??? maybe? I have to work the next 6 days and various shifts...so what to do? No clue ?

Thank you all for your support ....I really appreciate not being alone in this.

If it's an impacted egg, you will have to oil your finger and probe her. If there is, SpeckledHen or someone else with more experience can guide you on what to do if you feel an eggg.

I agree with the others. The panting, breathing hard sounds like she is really stressed out. Is she completely alone? No other chickens next to her? Make sure she has someone next to her to lower her stress levels. Egg bound sounds causeable. At this point it is a wait and see situation. What worries me is the panting/breathing hard. Chickens cannot handle having there blood pressure elevated for long periods of time. I believe you have two seperate things going on with her. Meaning, a leg injury would not make a young chicken panting/breath hard. It is very possible (like it has been stated) she has injuried her leg/hip and the stress from that plus the fact the other chickens have turned on her, aggressive. That alone would make a hen egg bound. Stress/ not be comfortable would indicate less drinking fluids, which hens have to have adequate level for egg production. I'm sorry I'm not closer to you so that I could examine her.
