Any last ditch efforts you have up your sleeves?? (9-3-11 update)

ok...have decided to soak her in warm water anyways...have nothing to lose. She almost several times during the 30 minutes, fell alseep:)

made sure her vent was under water....

my dear husband helped me the entire time, and when he helped me with the towel, I was able to find her vent, and add vasoline. Oh, she loved that

She seemed very calm after wards, and was walking around, did see her drink, and nibble at the food, but not so mush as eat. She keeps laying down, and acts like the others do when they enter the nest box.

Just checked on her, and she is again laying, and her vent is pulsating in and out. Should I try it again??? or let her go a bit. We stopped the warm bath at 6:30 EST.?

She has stopped panting, and was preoccupied on her feather condition after the bath. she is alert, and her comb color has come back a llittle.

geez.....so sorry, you have been so very kind...and helpful...I feel bad, but hate to loss another so very early into this.

I think I would glove up and probe...sorry I can't offer more advice, but after losing my favorite quail last week to being egg bound, I would happily probe the vent a little to avoid that loss... i know that sounds crude but

I think I would vaseline her as high up inside as you can, and continue the warm baths. It seems to make her feel better. If she continues to get in and out of the nest, I would say it's an egg.

When my hen had a stuck egg, I could feel it. I coated around the egg with oil, like loosening the skin around the egg. It was stuck. I was going to wait 30 min.then soak her but she passed the egg. Her symptoms were panting, she looked like something was wrong, and walked funny. And she kept going back to the nest, then walking around, then getting back in the nest.

I hope you find what's wrong

It is late here and she is still up walking.....how i know this is because I am up checking on her...she hasn't laid down yet...I am afraid I can't do the bath by myself. She is eating and drinking more though...

Will update as I discover....

Again thank you all....

Did a 2nd bath last night anyways, and she kept lifting her tail feathers and looked as if she was straining, and pushing. Finished at 1:30.

Nothing this morning.....

Will try again after work this evening. She loves the bath, she falls asleep in it.

Maybe a vet can help? Some people would also give her Tums (calcium). But the egg needs to come out. Poor thing!

Gave her another warm water bath tonight. Was able to really get some vasoline up in the vent, but did not feel any egg. ?? Should I have? Massaged her belly and only felt her breast bone, and then worked my way to her back side. She fell alseep again. makes me giggle at that thought. Am I going to spoil her with baths each night if she makes it?

Her combs, and waddles are bright red again. She was eating when I came home, and she did drink a little. Waterer shows she is drinking. Not looking ill.

Pants alot, and it's not that hot here. High today was 75. Now keep in mind she is in the garage with no fresh air while we are at work, so that may make her alot more warm than usual.

Maybe good news...my sister has a mini farm, and is at fair this week. She has entered 2 banty hens, and she mentioned that she would ask about my hen, and maybe, just maybe one person might be willing to look her over for me at a very reduced rate!!! If so, I will drive the 40 miles to have her looked at:)

If it was an egg bound hen, don't they get sicker and sicker from not pasing it. ?

Again as always...thanks....will let you know how i fair with this. My hen and I are getting bonding time though

Well, my hen seems a bit better, and after all that soaking, and both of us losing sleep, she finally laid her 1st egg today! So, I can rule out egg bound. She is eating and drinking well, so moving day is today.

Read an article at work, about reintroduction, and have a plan in my head......

Plan to keep her for a week during the day in the current dog crate she is in, but just outside the run. Then at night the small dog crate will fit in perfect under the nest boxes in the corner of the coop.

I will transfer her for a week back and forth. Then move the daytime crate in the run, for another few weeks. Again transferring her to the indoor crate at night.

I will buy a nest box at work, and have a tarp to cover one end in case of bad weather with the bottom tray of the crate as the top cover from sun, and rain also.

This will give her some chicken friends, and fresh air, and still allow her leg to continue to heal. She can't jump or run too much this way.

Then after about a month I will slowly let her out to see what happens. I understand some squabbling will take place, but can't have them all attacking her. Hoping for the best!!!!!

Hope my plan works...she has to get back into the flock!

I'm glad your hen's feeling better. Your reintroduction plan sounds like a good one. Hope it all works out well, after all the effort you put in. Good luck and keep us posted.
