Anybody setting today 9-20-09? Or close to it? Newbie Hatcher here!

#10 has hatched, #11 has pipped, #12 has no sound coming from it. I'm afraid it may be a dud. We snapped a pic of a few little heads poking out.

Awww, what a cute "family photo". I can't wait until one of our Orps goes broody and hatches out her own chicks. I really thought Sky was broody on at least three occasions, but she gave it up too soon to make anything happen. Hopefully, she'll get it together next spring sometime.

Since I put my eggs in on the 20th at noon, lockdown for me should start on Wednesday the 7th, right?

Those babies are so cute! (Momma, too!

JE anything new on the other (ten?) eggs? We finally took 'I' (Ivanhoe) out, there wasn't anything large enough to be recognized as a chick, but either it had started to develop or there was a meatspot in the yolk... rapidly spoiling.

faerielady, I believe you are correct. I have 3 that are going on lockdown Tuesday. I put them in early on the the 19th.

Eleven more should hatch next week. I have 5 others that I suspect are clears, but I'll wait until later in the week to pull them -- unless they start looking dangerous.

I was starting to get worried about the delayed hatchings, so I candled again. I found that three of the remaining ten eggs had apparantly died shortly after the last candling or so. They weren't nearly as far along in their development and appeared to have "blood rings". I threw them out, but left the other seven that looked "filled up with chick" in the 'bator.

Another Andy egg pipped last night, but the chick is taking its sweet time about hatching. So far, it just clacks its little beak open and closed, although it has somehow managed to widen the pip hole somewhat to form a small window. I just checked on it to make sure it was still breathing and moving, and it seems alright. I don't want to "help" it out unless I'm sure it's really ready. I'd rather let it work at it on its own, but I'll step in if I think it can't make it out without assistance.

While I was in there, I rolled over the other eggs to see if there was any activity... and I found another pipped egg! This is the one I've been waiting for since it's the largest Orp egg we set. (We had another large egg, but it was one of the three that I just had to throw out.) We feel sure it came from Shade because she usually lays the biggest eggs. If so, the chick will be blue, having come from a black hen x splash roo breeding.

I'm not giving up on the other five eggs yet, even though they seem too quiet at the moment. I'm still hoping they are just "late bloomers".

The "slow" chick finally hatched out on its own!!!

It is a splash Andy from a refrigerated egg. The Orp egg is pipped, but is now in the "waiting" stage.

There's another Orp egg that hasn't pipped yet, as well as 4 Andy eggs with no hatching action. I really hope they get the show on the road soon!

Update: Chick #5 is pipped and in the process of hatching. Everything seems fine there!

However, i started worrying about the lack of progress with the remaining five eggs, and didn't think things looked good when I candled again this morning. I finally decided to poke some holes in the eggs to inspect. All 5 chicks had died in their shells, for some reason. It could be that they couldn't handle the incubator "crisis" we had on day 18, or the humidity inconsistencies caused them to drown inside their own membranes.

Our first hatch is almost over... we successfully hatched 5 chicks out of 18 eggs. I have 24 more eggs in another 'bator, and I hope things go a bit better with that batch. Wish me luck!

Aw, JE... I'm happy about the hatchlings, but sad about the 5 dead in shell ones.

So were all but one of the 5 that hatched Andalusians? You are still waiting on the big Orp egg, right?

I think I'm going to get a new thermostat at Christmas. This one doesn't shut off as well when the humidity is higher... I don't want to steam my eggs.

#11 hatched last night with a bit of assistance. It didn't look well this morning. Then this evening when I got home from work Dale had moved to the other end of her broody bungalow and left it behind. It is currently under a heat lamp. Fingers crossed, but I think it might not make it.

Candled #12, it had apparently given up just after the last candling.
