Anybody setting today 9-20-09? Or close to it? Newbie Hatcher here!

The only correction regarding the "blue gene" discussion is that Splash x Blue yields splash or blue offspring (rather than all blue).

Splash chicks can look almost completely white, silvery, or off-white; but as they mature they sometimes get some flecks of other colors (mostly black, it seems) in odd places.

Punnet Square percentages:
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash
Splash x Blue = 50% Splash, 50% Blue
Splash x Black = 100% Blue
Blue x Blue = 25% Splash, 50% Blue, 25% Black
Blue x Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Black x Black = 100% Black

Keep in mind, it is possible to get different shades of blue. Some breeders believe that the blue offspring from a cross between two blue parents is "better quality" than a blue resulting from a splash x black cross.

This conversation only refers to "Andalusian blue" genetics, not "true blue" color traits.

Splash should always have 'specks' of black on them, otherwise they wouldn't be splash. It can be as few as 2 or 3, or it can be something like this:

Or like this:

Well, that was kinda sad

Did my last candling before lockdown... and removed 5 SL cochin eggs and 2 pyncheon bantams eggs due to early quit. I left a SL cochin egg in there that I wasn't sure about, 3 looked ok but not terribly great.

Now I'm down to 4 SL cochin eggs and 6 pyncheon bantam eggs.

I have 2 doz silkie eggs on order from CJExotics... I hope I get a few from there too. But looks like I'm gonna be on the market for more LF eggs... I was hoping the LF SL cochin eggs would be ok, but I guess not. With only 4 potentials, factoring in the possibility of roos, I should probably hedge my bets and buy more LF eggs. I don't know what kind to buy though. Thought I wanted BCMs, but I heard they were hard to hatch. With this homemade bator and some issues with keeping the temperature stable, I don't want to spend that kind of money on eggs.

Right now I have 3 bators up and running..(I cant believe that. I am an addict!) I am trying to get some good quality silkies...I have 23 split in 2 bators from bobbi porto

I'm not candling my seramas and barnyard mix closely this time. As long as no smell and no seepage I'm just going with it.

I just set the most beautiful golden cuckoo marans eggs from Nivtup...

Third try on marans eggs....
And eggs from Halo BBS Rocks. And Seramas from my friend Billy and Sizzles from my flock.

Should be a Halloween hatch. Unless they're all immediately apparent Roos - that should be it til Spring. Did find a double yolker yesterday that I'm setting.

Might as well.

I hate it when most of what you set is clear or quit.

I'm having some issues getting the humidity stable. Gah. Last night it got up to 85%, so I took the cup out and left the wet washrag in there. This morning it was between 65-70ish%, so I left it alone. I really don't want to have to open it back up.
