sorry, tomorrow is a new day. got much to do now that the flower eggs are good.adding on to the new coop. The smallest one flew across the coop today. don't even have tail feathers yet..Still waiting for a pic of Inna and her chicks....![]()
Yes, I run around 100.5. Which is technically a degree higher then it should be. But it works for me. I hatch (probably way to much, lol) a lot year round and usually whatever makes it to lockdown hatches, maybe minus 1.@RubyNala97 do you normally run the temp higher? Do you get a better hatch rate that way? Good luck!
I read that bantams eggs may hatch early, the LF eggs started hatching yesterday too though! Today is Day 20. 6 bantam eggs made it to LD, 5 hatched. I think the other one quit around day 13-14, but it was a blue egg I couldn't see in very well. Last time I counted there were about 22 chicks total so far. 29 of 42 eggs made it LD. Most of the one that haven't hatched were either too dark to see anything but the air cells.
You know what are the best eggs to candle? Duck eggs! I swear when you candle them they seem translucent. You can see every little detail inside the egg from the moment develop starts, around day 2. They are my favorite for candling! Are White eggs easier to candle? The Flower eggs will be a week old tomorrow. Going to see what they look like.
So, day one went as bad as it could possibly be. I went down before work to feed them some grapes and some left over watermelon and as I approached I hear Inna fussing about something.
I open the door to see a 4 1/2 foot Black snake. My heart fell in my pants and then protective parent kicked in. She was fighting the snake and kicked it my way. I grabbed the snake without thinking and threw it into the yard behind me. I looked at Inna and she had a bloody face and 3 of the eggs were broken. That's when pissed mode kicked in.
I know it's not the snake's fault. It's just acting on natural instinct and hunting for food but, I just got those eggs that was very costly and one of my girls were hurt.
I usually just relocate black snakes as they are helpful more than hurtful but since this one knows where my hens nests are, I disposed of this one.
I guess I will get blasted over this one but, what would you have done? Inna still had 5 eggs left and I cleaned her up and put some medicated save one her face.
