Anyone else Hatching Turkeys around the 27th of May?

Well, I am deff. no expert on turkeys. I have only hatched out two. LOL. I do know that it takes them about 28 days to hatch. You should start hearing some noise soon from them. What do you plan to do with her and the babies after they hatch? Is that lady going to take them? I hope so.

Well thanks for your post! Yes, the woman I work with and her husband are planning on taking the turkeys once they hatch. We hope that the transition will be fine for them. Once they are there and transition to a farm with other chickens and turkeys, they have a far better chance of survival than here in the city, so I feel good about that decision. There are 3 dogs in the townhome complex here.... one is my mom's little poodle/bischon, who probably wouldn't harm them, but the neighbors have a pekinese and a dog that looks like a german shepherd mix with another breed.... definitely a hunting-type of breed, so we haven't told all of the neighbors yet.

I'll let you all know when we hear pecking and peeping! Is there a way to tell if the eggs are fertile or not? I haven't seen the eggs, my mom has. She's been on them so much, and we are trying to leave her alone as much as we can to not disturb her. She's a very loyal mom!

Also.... when we plan to transport to Alma's farm, how old should babies be before that is planned? We heard the poults can start to fly a few feet up when they're about 2 weeks old.

Will a mommy turkey sit on eggs that are not fertile? Someone told us that, and so of course, now we wonder. I figured they have some type of animal intuition to know if they are fertile or not.

Have a great night!

Yeah you can get a small bright flash light and take one of the eggs somewhere dark. Put the light up to the big end of the egg and you can see all of way thru it then they are not fertile. If they are dark and have like a hollow spot at the big end then they are fertile. That is really the best way I know how to describe it. On the forum there are some candeling pics somewhere. I will find you a link and post it. Give me a few.

Well out of 6 turkey eggs I have 1 that actually developed and has a moving chick inside when candled. I will be so upset if this 1 doesn't hatch. I don't understand why I can't seem to get Turkey eggs that will develop for me.

Turkey eggs seem kinda fragile, like the poults themselves. Mine have gone 0/6, 7/11 (the disaster hatch), 7/12 - ten hatched 7 lived, 9/14 - 10 hatched nine made it, and six still in the bator.

While you can't count your chickens before they hatch, you REALLY can't count your turkeys before the hatch, big time.

Well I still have two turkey eggs under my mama duck and they are still moving. She hatched out a chicken today and another was pipping this evening. Cute cute cute. It is a Black Jersey Giant and RIR mix. I took the chick and am letting my golden lace seabright that just had two babies hatch out be a foster mom. She took it right in and pushed it right under her wing. I really did not have a place for the mama duck to raise a chick so I figured the other mama would be perfect.

. Guess I will put the other baby with her too. It is gonna be funny though cus that little chick will dwarf her before long. Its a fat little booger. looks just like the jersey giants. Will keep you posted on the turkey eggs. I have 4 more in my incubator but they are not due to hatch till June 12. I am gonna have to start expanding!
