Well thanks for your post! Yes, the woman I work with and her husband are planning on taking the turkeys once they hatch. We hope that the transition will be fine for them. Once they are there and transition to a farm with other chickens and turkeys, they have a far better chance of survival than here in the city, so I feel good about that decision. There are 3 dogs in the townhome complex here.... one is my mom's little poodle/bischon, who probably wouldn't harm them, but the neighbors have a pekinese and a dog that looks like a german shepherd mix with another breed.... definitely a hunting-type of breed, so we haven't told all of the neighbors yet.
I'll let you all know when we hear pecking and peeping! Is there a way to tell if the eggs are fertile or not? I haven't seen the eggs, my mom has. She's been on them so much, and we are trying to leave her alone as much as we can to not disturb her. She's a very loyal mom!
Also.... when we plan to transport to Alma's farm, how old should babies be before that is planned? We heard the poults can start to fly a few feet up when they're about 2 weeks old.
Will a mommy turkey sit on eggs that are not fertile? Someone told us that, and so of course, now we wonder. I figured they have some type of animal intuition to know if they are fertile or not.
Have a great night!
Julie
