Anyone familiar with this breed?

Hi everyone, as some of you know (by looking at my account signature) I breed over 25 different breeds of chickens and just added one I am not familiar with; the Golden Lakenvelder aka the Vorwerk. Anyone familiar with the breed? I do study a lot on each of my birds, but I always love raw advise.

I don't know anything about the breed but it would make a great official chicken for the black and gold Pittsburgh Steelers!!

The Vorwerk and Golden Lakenvelder look similar, but are two different breeds. I would love to hatch out some Vorwerks, but they are still too pricey. Maybe in a couple of years the prices will come down.

ok this is funny. the definition of Vorwerk in German is:
a Vorwerk (fortification), an advanced fortification of a local castle
that often a became serfdom-based agricultural outpost of a manor estate,
namegiving for the above-mentioned toponyms.

Interesting pronunciation. So basically Vorwek means a "village". So if one wants to breed Vorwerks, it literally takes a village.

The Vorwerk is a separate breed from the Golden Lakenvelder. The Vorwerk is a bit heavier and the build isn’t as slim as the Lakenvelder.

The Vorwerk was developed by Oskar Vorwerk, hence the name. The Bantam Vorwerk was developed in this country by Wilmar Vorwerk, who surprisingly, was not related to Osckar (at least according to what I read). I just think they are beautiful. I tried all summer to get the eggs on ebay, but they were bid up and went for an average of $66. (the highest was $102.) and shipping was added to that. This was for 10 eggs. With shipped eggs having an~50% hatch rate and half of those being males, I just couldn't justify the price to get only 2-3 hens. Once the recipients of the eggs start hatching their own, the price should come down.

Many years ago, I had some silver lakenvelders. I don't remember much about them other than they were really pretty birds and good layers. They're not seen very often and I ended up selling them to someone who offered me $100 a pair.
