Yup, live and learn. The whole process is amazing and I feel blessed to be able to participate so intimately in the life of these little ones.

THe complexities always just astound me. When I was pregnant and you realize every little millionth thing that has to happen at the exact same time..... now, with hatching these it is kind of the same thing...it hits you how incredibly complex it is and the nuances that have to happen. It also makes me feel that as moms, we MUST be better at listening to our internal voices because what mother hens and mother ducks clearly know about hatching and rearing chicks is so incredible and, I think, that we have lost that innate ability to just completely trust ourselves as mothers/parents sometimes because everyone else seems to "know" so much more...we forget to just trust our gut. Anyway, I DIGRESS!

Congrats to all who are having a great hatch and my heart goes out to those that have not....

I agree with you completely and i often wonder how the human species ever survived lol... Theres alot of things about being a mother that i dont know... I think modern woman have so many people surounding them who are so willing to give them advice (good or bad) that we dont have to listen to our gut and in the end we feel like its more of a risk to go with our "unknowledgeable" gut instinct then to go off of someone else's proven experience. when our bodies should know better what our children need.
Hatching chicks its amazing and just like with our own babies its also scary because we know how much can go wrong!!! I feel blessed that God/ science has given us and our children the tools to be apart of such an amazing experience!

I have one that is piped on the wrong end it is moving I can see the movement in the opening. I guess it is head down in the narrow end of the egg the air cell is on top I checked them all at lockdown. It does seem to be making progress in breaking the shell it just makes me so nervous that it is breaking from the bottom.

and this time on the right end of the egg!

Day 21 starts at 7PM tonight for me. I have had a weird hatch. Power loss for 3 days, trying to keep temps witha woodstove, stressing on humidity, driving back and forth to a power source... Ill be amazed at anyone who makes it. My 1st hatch ever (3 weeks ago) was 19 of 24 and all went smoothly. This has been ore stressful, and yet, I have 2 pips this morning from Light Sussex eggs. 21 viable and 3 questionable eggs went into lockdown. Good Luck to all , Congrats to others.

when was lockdown? and have you candled yet?

Lockdown was Sat. the 2nd. I candled before lockdown and I know some of them where not good but I put them in anyway. I am still not 100% good at candleing and didnt want to toss a good egg that I thought was bad. Every thing has been reading good and everything is calibrated, but today the tep. and humidity are jumping up and then down then up again. IDK what to do now but just go buy some chicks.

sounds like a good time to try the float test

Yeah, 5 out of 6 have hatched now. No. 6 has not yet pipped. Do you think it is safe to remove the chicks while the remaining egg is not yet pipped? My first chicks are going on 48 hrs. Just wondering. Pix are coming soon!

Are they pretty much fluffed up? What I do when I have a lot, and one hasn't pipped yet..is to raise my humidity really high..then hurry and snatch a couple of babies at a time. If the humidity drops..I raise it again high, then get more.

Sneaky, usually works fine..your humidity is probably already up...how long is it for you? If it is day 21, I would give the egg one more day, then maybe considering helping it. Hope this helps.

well i just got home and still nothing so i candled them again. there are 13 that i still see moving inside the egg. there are 7 that are questions. they look ok but i don't see them moving. at lock down i saw 4 that were questionable. hopefully since they are still moving they may hatch. i guess these babies don't know that momma is a VERY punctual person and does not tolerate tardiness.

anyway i am hopeful again. i was planning on coming home and ordering more eggs. probably should wait a few more days. so happy for all the babies so far.
