Do as I did and eliminate all hiding spots for growing babies and the adults will eat the eggs, and any that hatch. I only had breeding one year with my goldfish, by the next year they were big enough to eat up any that survived past the egg stage.

Wouldn't work in my pond, but is possible if you are planning a pond from scratch. Difficult if you want any rockwork or plants or a good sized pond though.

I only added 6 goldfish to my pond - they breed like crazy. I even had a huge die off 2 years ago and lost almost all my fish and still have a ton. My pond is only ~14' long x ~4-9' wide and ~4-5' deep with a 6000GPH pump + a secondary 1200GPH pump. The gallons go up pretty fast if you make your pond appropriately deep.

Perhaps you should look into fancy goldfish (orandas, ranchus, etc) which don't breed as much, stay smaller and prefer calmer water. They are still relaxing, but you can be fairly sure that the number you buy will be close to the number that are actually in your pond.

Oh wow yeah I can see why the gallons would go up fast. I think that's still pretty big for the area we have though and I'm only planning to make it 3 feet deep or maybe half 2 feet deep with a 3 foot deep end as our frost line is only 3 feet. Although I'll probably bring them inside in winter anyways but yeah. Only making it 2 or 3 feet deep.

And I didn't think fancies could be in ponds so I'll have to look into them.

That's a good idea.

I'm still unsure about plants but I think we definitely want rocks either inside or around the edges.

Maybe I could sell some of the babies when they get big enough. Probably not much of a market but worth a shot.

Thanks for the link. I never realized rocks were so bad. It's a bit of a shame cause they look so nice but not good for the fish apparently

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm just worried my mom will think it's ugly or something and not approve but I'm going to insist for the fishes' safety.
