Diversity Training.

Is this an example of a word perversely used in the opposite sense to its real meaning? Diversity is about being different but I suspect that, in the context of diversity training, it's about everyone being much the same and all chummy and nice to one another all the time - like robots or Stepford wives. It's a marketing ploy, a bit of packaging, selling something that used to be called interpersonal skills training. I guess that IPT ran out of steam and needed to be repackaged.

To return to the topic, this sort of training reminds me of the 'let's all agree with what I say' religious teachers. No room for dissent or questions. No time for the devil's henchmen who find the false logic in what they say. These people have lost more souls from the churches than the Spanish Inquisition.

The subject of child abuse within establishments controlled by religious organisations hasn't come up in this thread yet. It's not happening only in the RC Church, of course. Has this scandal that has been going on for decades or longer influenced anyone's religious beliefs or their view of organised religion?

Wifezilla, when I was in college (not that long ago, I went back late) we learned about how little we understand the brain. It is one area that we know very little about. Newsfolk stating as fact that we only use 10% of it and swearing that is correct is kinda like the rest of this discussion we're having isn't it? We love to explain everything (whether we can or not) and build whole lessons based on these "guesses" and state them as fact.

The diversity training refers to teaching the cliques to learn to accept others that are different. There has been so many incidents of racial and cultural tension (or worse) that some people need to be trained on how to treat others with a little commom decency. This is why Mom'sfolly thinks it's ridiculous that adults need to be taught this. They should have learned this by kindergarten, at the latest.
As far as the subject of child abuse etc... I'd bet that most of the folks here have such strong emotions regarding that topic (especially with the latest news coming out of the Vatican) that they do not trust themselves to express their thoughts and stay within the "nice" guidelines that Redux requested. I have discussed this at length with friends and family lately but am so horrified (and have been for quite some time) that being nice is too difficult to maintain, so I have not brought it up here on purpose. I'm not discussing the subject now, I'm just explaining why I'm not going to discuss it here. It is a very emotional topic and one I feel safe discussing with friends and family. I know that all the people here are of the same mind anyway. No heart can hear of such horrors without crying out in frustration and pain but to discuss it in detail is too much, I think, for a forum like this. Now, having even alluded to this topic I think everyone out there probably needs a ton of these!

I know I could use one right now.

Once during bible class we were being talked to about using bad language. It was suggested that instead of the bad words, we could substitute something like "oh sugarjets!" or "darn" or even "Fudgicles!" I raised my hand and asked "If God knows our every thought, won't he know that we really mean 'oh s%$*' or whatever?" The answer? You may go and sit outside under the tree til it's time to go home. These things happened on a regular basis. Whatever you do, don't think for yourself or ask questions.

Llike others here, I seem to be focusing on the Christian faith. That's not to suggest that it's bad and others aren't. It's only because that's the one I was involved with. I know that the same things are happening all over the place with every faith and belief system.

I asked him, what words I could use to express surprise or shock. He had no answer.

If there is a God, I think that he or she would be more worried with how we treat our fellow man then what words come out of our mouth. I have known some very kindly people that cursed up a storm and very cold people who were very careful not to say any bad word at all.

And like you, I am not purposely attacking Christianity, but because it was the faith that I was brought up with, it is the one that I have the most stories about.

KDbeads and curliet, you are so funny! Deb1 I hope you are right. I don't smoke, drink or gamble (well I do like to play the lottery now and then) but the occasional swear word is something I have had the hardest time overcoming. I personally think that we are all fallible but I know that my status as a minister (even though I'm not a christian minister) does make people feel as though I should be able to refrain from such things better than the rest of us. It is just such a great release for me when I am upset or trying to really emphasize a point! I don't know if I'll ever kick the habit for good. I do manage, quite well though, to refrain from swearing when I am acting in an official capacity or I'm in public. I personally have very little problem with swearing in general, though I get very upset when someone calls another "stupid" or something to that effect.

Being a grandma and a minister, it can be quite shocking for someone who has never heard me swear though to eventually hear me belt something out when I really want to get their attention!

Two gals were visiting at their High School Reunion.

One of them was bragging about her Family, her House, her Husband's business success, their vacation home, their car, sailboat, etc.

The second gal said, "Fantastic ! "

Then the first gal said, "You went to a "Finishing School" after graduation. What did they teach you at "Finishing School"?"

"They taught me to say "Fantastic" instead of "xxxx". "

So I guess there are some words which CAN be used instead of curse-words.
