For one because atheism is NOT a belief. It is a lack of belief in god(s). Atheism is NOT a religion it is a lack of religion. Atheists do not all have the same core values or the same reasons for non-belief. The sooner you wrap your brain around that the better, because most people out there assume we have this organized 'religious' thing going on when they honestly have no clue what we really are. There is no organization of what we are supposed to think.
You can not show concrete, irrefutable, scientific proof that there is a god to sway an atheist to your way of thinking. Continually trying to shove your belief system at everyone is not debate nor is it something atheists appreciate.

This thread was not for debate on the subject either, you want to debate it, try other forums for atheists/theists who have large sections just for such purpose. Want one? PM me.

Deb, I apologize if I stepped in where I shouldn't have, but I can't sit and just watch this any more.

I thought that you made interesting points. So please don't apologize.

What about the morals question she asked a few pages back that was lost in the recent stuff?

My morals? If I don't want it done to me, I'm not going to do it to someone else. It's how I look at everything. Do no harm ( I think that's actually wiccan but it fits for me).

When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad, and that is my religion. - Abraham Lincoln

This is basically what I believe. I try to treat everyone with the same consideration that I want to be treated. Most of my morals spring from that one rule.

And what really gets me the strange looks is when I say that I alone am responsible for what I do or don't do, no higher power guided me to it or conned me into it. It's a heavy burden for some to be solely responsible for their own actions.
If I did something bad, it's my fault, I own it and all it's repercussions. If I do something good, it was me, I own it and all it's rewards. Lots of people out there can't deal with that concept very well.

I know! I know that feeling exactly! Some folks would say all the bad things happening to me was God's Will which it isn't. My fault, and only my fault, no one else's!

As for my morals, I try to follow the good and weed out the bad. Treat people like you wanted to be treated. Help others in need and do accept help gracefully even you do not want or need help (but you REALLY do!).

I think our species behaves more like ants or locust..

Your post has me thinking... Really we do not even know how small the microcosmic world goes, nor do we know how large the the macro cosmic world is... So far we are to quarks on the small side and the known universe the large side... Do we really know that is it? Maybe everything we can comprehend is really all contained in something much larger and our known universe is about the size of an a bacteria. The concept of creator is pretty far out there. Maybe our whole known universe is nothing more than a bacteria contained within chicken poop on the lawn. Thats our whole universe maybe.. In that case the creator is some cosmic chicken that took a dump.. Know what created that chicken? what created the thing that created the chicken... On and on it goes. What about the creators creator....??? It gets to be beyond a language beyond comprehension real fast...

I personally refuse to worship anything but life itself. Cherish each moment. Savor the sweet and the bitter. Live it as best I can, and the way I see fit, NOT the way anyone tells me too.
For me. I am simply humbled by everything thing around me animate and inanimate.

Yes it is fun to ponder, and yes I enjoy discussing the "human condition" which causes us to think the things we do at times..

ON
Compost waiting to happen...

Your post reminded me of the last lines from the poem, Invictus.

I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Totally off track, but "green" burials (no embalming, no concrete vault, no metal or wood casket) are becoming much more accepted and hence legal in many jurisdictions. I've always thought that the modern version of a graveyard burial is a massive waste of land and money.

My parents were both cremated and both my husband and I plan to be - I told my husband he can spend "eternity" in a pretty little wooden box on my desk, right next to the box that holds the cremated remains of our beloved dog. I'll keep them nearby and talk to both of them (assuming he goes first, of course).

Hey, I never said the Creator of the Universe WASN'T a chicken!

Works for me! I just know WE didn't create it.

I refuse to WORSHIP anything at all. Yeah, I do talk to the guy, and I certainly respect him and admire his creativity. But that is a far cry from "worshiping". I don't think "worshiping" ANYTHING is quite healthy. WORSHIP kinda implies that you give up responsibility for thinking critically and objectively about the object you are worshiping. Or so it seems to me.
