Anyone order from Farwest hatchery out of Oregon??

It sound like I am only adding much of what has already been said but I am terribly disappointed with the communication and forthrightness of Far West Hatchery. My wife and I wanted to replace our existing flock with 10 new pullets (we live in Portland so no roosters as I hear my neighbors dog barking incessantly

).

We also wanted to be selective about the types of birds we chose since we were looking for good layers. Any mail order place requires a minimum 25 chicks and the finding other families thing seemed like more work than I wanted. I found Far West through an Internet search. Their website is decent and it looked like they provided a wide selection of birds and very good prices compared to some of the boutique farm stores in Portland. I contact them via email ([email protected]) on December 11, 2012 and received a response from Tony the next day!!! Wow!!!

The email stated that the first scheduled hatch for 2013 was scheduled for February 12 and he thought they might even have some chicks before then. He also stated that most breeds on the website should be available and I should just email him my list. On December 18th I responded that we wanted 2 Americauna, 2 Black Australorp, 2 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 2 Austra White, and 2 Delaware. Finally on January 22nd I received an email back from Jan stating that my order had been placed for the February 26th hatching. This seemed reasonable as I was being selective about the chick and two weeks after the expected delivery was fine. In this same email I was also informed that the Wyandottes would not be available until late March. Odd but still OK and in my response on January 25th we changed to 2 Barnevelders.

on January 31st I get another email from Jan telling me the Barnevelders are sold out for the season and...oh, by the way...the entire order will now not be available until April 16th.

. Anyway, I sent Jan an email stating my frustration and disappointment. I asked her to consider the email a cancellation of my order and that I would not feel comfortable recommending them to anyone.

Take it or leave it. I will not order form Far West ever again and I will discourage anyone if they ask my opinion on the subject.

Did you pay? And if you did order did they refund your money?

This business might still be trying to get off the ground, but it gets shadier and shadier.

I am very sorry to see the problems this local business is having, but appreciate the honesty of you people. I was thinking of trying to order from them this year, thinking that after 2 years, now they should have their act together. I am glad I read these recent rants and will go with another hatchery.
Chicken people must stick together!

I did not pay any money up front. The first communication (from December 2012) said that no payment would be due until after the first of the year. Everything started falling apart at that point.

Ok, I gave in to my motherly instinct to order chicks from this Hatchery today. Talked with Jan who was very nice and patient with my order. I ordered 25 silky and frizzle chicks of mixed colors which she said I can do. My order is to be ready April 30th, with option to ship or pick up (with advance notice).

Jan assured me that there will be no other types of chicks in my order including regular Banty breed. I stressed to Jan that I ONLY WANT silkies and frizzles and NOTHING else..... So we will see.

My husband being the loving man he is that adores our chickens wants to go pick the kids up so they won't have a rough trip to Klamath Falls Oregon. Postal people can be pretty rough. Anyways I will keep all you out there informed on how it turns out.

I want a local hatchery to order these specialty breeds through and not have to go out east to get them. Praying everything goes well and no surprises! Heres a picture of two of my girls....

Aww, your girls are cuties! I just love the look of the Silkies, so soft and cuddly looking. I wanted one, but after hearing how broody they are and how they love to be moms, I didn't think they were for me 'cause I'm not set up for having chicks I'm not keeping and I can only keep so many. I will have to just admire their pics...that is unless someone in my area has some they need a babysitter for. Maybe I should advertise for that...it could read like this: "Need a night out with your spouse, want to go on vacation? I'll be happy to babysit your Silkies as long as I'm promised they'll let me cuddle them," lol!

Fingers crossed everything goes well with your new chicks!

I was tempted to order some Cornish X because they are very reasonable and shipping isn't bad since I live in Oregon.
I bought 4 Barnevelders,2 Welsumners from the Eugene Backyard Farmer who receives their chicks from Farwest. The chicks looked nice, but for some reason 3 of my Barnevelders died suddenly at 4 weeks. I've never lost young chicks before, so I don't know why they died. The remaining Barnevelder is beautiful and so are the Welsumners. I bought 2 Speckled Sussex and a Delaware a few months later and they are beautiful and healthy.

I want more Barnevelders, Welsumners and Delawares. I plan on getting them from Eugene Backyard Farmer when he gets them. I'll let him deal with Farwest. I trust him and wouldn't think he would order from them if he had customer complaints. He's also really good about holding chicks for you until you can come get them.

If I can't get my Cornish at Coastal, I will order from Farwest and see how they are.
