Anyone painted their hardware cloth black?

I would like to know how this holds up. Can anyone who has painted theirs give advice?

In my experience, painted galvanized horse fencing does NOT hold up and chips off.

I love the look of the black wire, but not if it chips off and looks bad a couple years later.

Painted mine with bitumin paint using an old roller. 2 years on and it still doesn’t need touching up.

Elastomeric is what you use to paint rolled roofing or modified bitumen, if that's what you mean.


I had black hardware cloth, then painted it white. Painting it white made it very difficult to see through. I installed some coated dark green and uncoated galvanized, and it is much better than the white. Black is the easiest to see through.

It was a tin of ‘blackjack DPM’ paint that I had in the garage. It’s supposed to be used on floors that suffer with damp issues. I just wanted rid of the tin so thought it’d be a good use for it. It’s basically bitumin paint.

If anyone is interested, Carolina Coops sells black hardware cloth, 1/2 inch. It can be expensive but worth it. I didn't get it but wish I would have. Their coops are so nice. Just go to their website and contact them about buying it if you are interested.

I bet you really regretted that! I wound up buying regular hardware cloth because the 1/2" black coated was SO expensive.

Well it was plastic that I got for free. Between painting it white and realizing that a raccoon would go through it like a hot knife, I didn't feel bad replacing it with the green stuff.

I always thought people painted the cloth to buffer all those little burrs on it. I did not know it was a visibility thing.
