Anyone painted their hardware cloth black?

Painted mine with bitumin paint using an old roller. 2 years on and it still doesn’t need touching up.

Is that the stuff you paint on mobile home roofs?

It was a tin of ‘blackjack DPM’ paint that I had in the garage. It’s supposed to be used on floors that suffer with damp issues. I just wanted rid of the tin so thought it’d be a good use for it. It’s basically bitumin paint.

I am also getting ready to do this - seems like the consensus is to paint the cloth before attaching to the run/coop? I plan to use a roller, but it seems like it will be hard to get the hardware cloth flat enough.

Here is a visual for people that do not understand. This is about hunting blinds and the screen on them and how it is hard to see through them until you paint them black. The black doesn't reflect light, so it becomes "invisible" to your brain in the sight picture.

Notice how you can not see the bottom of the blind or grass in the top picture and you can in the bottom one and this is a tight screen. Soldiers are taught this with their face masks for the inside.

I painted mine to match the coop I just used regular outdoor paint I'm glad I did it, but it would have been easier if I had done it before I attached it to my coop!

Okay, good to know. I'll be sure to do it before I attach it to the coop!

I'm wondering if it would be worth it with 1/2" hardware cloth. Is the visibility that much different if it's painted black?

Well it was plastic that I got for free. Between painting it white and realizing that a raccoon would go through it like a hot knife, I didn't feel bad replacing it with the green stuff.

I always thought people painted the cloth to buffer all those little burrs on it. I did not know it was a visibility thing.
