Anyone ready to ring in the new year...and lose weight/get fit?

Carbohydrate content of an ear of yellow corn:

Corn, sweet, yellow, raw ear, large (7-3/4" to 9" long) yields 27.20g
Corn, sweet, yellow, raw ear, medium (6-3/4" to 7-1/2" long) yields 17.12g
Corn, sweet, yellow, raw ear, small (5-1/2" to 6-1/2" long) 13.88g

Carbohydrates, depending on how many total grams you can eat a day without your body creating fat, are primarily the same with regards to weight gain/loss. The total grams you consume is of more importance. Many people must stay under 20 total grams of carbohydrate a day to maintain weight, much less to lose, so even a small ear of corn packs a pretty big wallop.

I'm reading the info on carbs with interest! If you are considered "high activity level" (as in, 600-900 calories burned in gym classes alone), I'm assuming that taps stored carbs? Ideally speaking, I like to watch what I eat, but I hope to just up my weight training and cardiovascular training and be able to eat those cobs of corn with no worries!

In my opinion NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS it is a matter of quantity and frequency, and balancing your indulgences w/ very strict eating for the rest of that day or maybe even a couple of days if the indulgence is bad. As to corn specifically, just think about what they feed cattle to "fatten them up" for slaugter ................................................ corn. I still have my occasional corn on the cob maybe a few times a year, and corn bread, but I am careful about how much I eat and how often.

It's great such a philosophy works for you. That said, controlling carbohydrate intake for some folks isn't that easy. In some people, eating a fairly small amount of carbohydrates will cause a spike in blood sugar. The pancreas then pours out insulin, causing a resultant drop in blood sugar and that causes the person to binge. This is physiological, not psychological or a lack of mental control. Wheat acts in a similar fashion to opiates in susceptible people. Enjoying the rolls at a restaurant can trigger binge eating that has its basis in physiology, not in willpower. If a person has a ceiling of 20 grams of carbohydrate before experiencing a spike in blood sugar, eating even a small ear of corn puts them halfway to that 20 gram mark. Some folks like you (and my DH) can enjoy that occasional ear of corn, but it might lead others to stray gradually away from the level of carbohydrate their bodies can tolerate without weight gain and the resulting disease processes that go along with obesity.

And you are spot on realizing that cattle are purposely fattened on corn. I wish dog and cat food manufacturers would get that through their heads.

down 2 pounds since my friend fixed my sternum!

pain was holding me back! Who knew?
Considering how hard I thought I was working to lose weight after the bronchitis- and nothing moved, and how I did not try that hard after I was able to sleep through the night... I am shocked and amazed.

I wonder how many people are over weight because they just do not get enough sleep to be active?

And specking of active, I moved my activity level down to sedentary on fit day, and it seems like a more realistic calorie consumption for a woman of my age. I am not sedentary, but 2,500 calories are what men should be eating.
I like the nutrition bar on fit day. Good thing I take extra vit D and get lots of sunshine... or I'd have rickets.
or whatever it is that you get with low D.

I'm really sorry to hear that.

As for the calorie intake, my daily goal for calories was 1800, then I downed to 1500 and back up again. Sparkpeople helped me follow my own diet plan by me filling out the charts and amounts they asked for. If I ate too less of one thing, or too much it would warn me what and why. Though I have not been using them to track calories anymore (because I have learned to read packages and keep a close calculation in my head) I do use them for recipes and advice if I have a concern.

With all this, I'm only 11 lbs away from my goal. I may be able to wear a bikini this summer?!!?! Ummm.... no nevermind, I wouldn't torture people like that! lol

Oh, you better wear that bikini!

Nothing like a hot day at the water park, viewing all of the bodies that are willing to wear a bikini in spite of their weight to make you feel better about yourself!

I will look into spark people as well. 1500 cal/day seems more reasonable.

Glad to see so many of you are still working hard and losing!

I quit trying very hard because I wasn't getting anywhere, but I am starting again today. My hubby bought a pickup truck on Monday from a 63-year-old man. He mentioned he had lost 65 pounds SINCE JANUARY 1! I asked how and he said by doing the 17-day-diet. His wife has lost 45 pounds in the same amount of time. I did some online research, read a lot of reviewers comments, and bought the book from Amazon! It hasn't come yet, but I found the book at Walmart and read the sample meals and allowed foods list.

It involves eating all the green veggies you can handle, yogurt, cottage cheese and other fat-free cheeses, most fruits-but not past 2:00 p.m., 2 eggs a day, and all the lean meat you can eat- some fish (Tilapia, Salmon, Tuna, etc.)and poultry.
Every 17 days you change what you eat a little and it "tricks" your metabolism so it doesn't go into starvation mode.
I will be keeping track of my weight in a notebook instead of using the chart-because I am weighing myself every day. A lot of people lose about a pound a day doing this diet-I am NOT expecting that though!

Hi I posted in the begining of this thread but have been away for a while.

Last year I managed to lose and keep off 10 lbs.. I was up to my heaviest at 152.. that may not seem like much, but it was too much for me. So I'm 142 now, but still wanted to lose more. The concept of eating what you want but less of it, really wasn't working. I have a goal and weight that I need to reach for a couple events in June and July and I want to look good for it.

In the begining of may I started a new venture to lose the rest of the weight. I am taking in about 800-600 calories a day. http://www.calorieking.com/ I'm eating as few man made products as possible, lots of salad, raw veggies and fruit, and water. I'm avoiding the white foods, though I still have some in very small amounts. Lean meat and nuts for proteins. I'm only eating small serving sizes.... like my grapenuts is 1/2 cup! I've cut out all pop, coffee, tea and candy. I eat 5-6 small meals a day. no butter, no sour cream, no salad dressing, no cream cheese, no fried food, no fast food, no salt other than what is in the food or our canned foods. No adult beverages either!

a typical day:
Breakfast: 1/2 cup grapenuts w/12 rasins (no milk-intollerant)
water
snack: Banana
water
Lunch: salad w/veggies - no dressing
water
snack: apple
water
Dinner: grilled chicken and steamed or home canned veggie
water
snack: 12 almonds or nothing

I've lost an additional 4 lbs in just a few weeks... I could have lost more but I still liked my beer! I stopped drinking that and lost another 2 lbs. I also walk at work every day for 30 minutes and I have a tread mill I hit for another 30 at home, including some running..and DH just picked up a bowflex for me so no more excuses!!

My work also started a new wellness program that couldn't have come at a better time. It helps track activity, food intake/carbs and if you have a goal weight it tracks your progress so you can see that you're moving toward your goal... So I know that to get to 125 lbs by end of june I can only take in so many calories and need a certain level of activity to reach the goal. I'm up and down a tadd on the chart, but I'm moving in the right direction!

I also have noticed that I feel lighter in my gut, I'm more comfortable, don't feel full or hungry. I'm sleeping better and my face has cleared up. I am looking better and people have noticed.. so that's just more motivational icing on the cake! And my jeans don't fit anymore either! Bonus! Shopping!

Congratulations to those who have lost weight, and keep up the good work to those who are trying.

vfem, I was working on a new recipe idea for low cal, low fat good tasting that isn't to bad w/ the hcg, it turned out great, but then I was struck w/ inspiration for an idea for the next pillsbury bake off, it's a sickness!! At least I have plenty of time to work on the concept, then see how I can incorporate it into the selected foods next year. But it is something I have NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF, but that may be b/c it is impossible (we'll see)
