Anyone watch Whale Wars??

Using "culture" as an excuse for whaling is ridiculous. And dangerous. Sure, it's our "culture" (for meat eaters) to eat cows. However, those cows were created, raised, and destined to be food. We make more of them. We're not going to run out. They are not a free and wild animal. THAT is the biggest problem I have with it. No one can "farm" whales and dolphins. They can't be domesticated and raised as food. It's my ocean too, and I'm not OK with it. The vast majority of the world is not OK with it. The Russian navy and coast guard fire upon, confiscate, and arrest Japanese poachers in their waters on a regular basis. I say more power to them. And many of the Japanese are uninformed. The people in Japan that we do business with are in the field of nuclear medicine imaging. Many of them are physicists, and they are unaware of many of these issues. The gov't there subsidizes whaling because it cannot be profitable on it's own. At last count there was nearly 6,000 tons in freezer storage. The younger population of Japan by and large do not eat whale and dolphin.

Where do you get your information? Animal Planet. Most people in the world are trying to figure where they are going to get their next meal. I did not say "I" support whaling I simply said I don't care. The original question of this post was "Does anybody..." I don't watch that show I have read about it, I don't watch Animal Planet either in fact I don't watch very much television at all any more it is full of lies and mis-information. Those shows are designed to stir up emotional responses in the crowds that watch them. I can go through almost any post in these forums and tell you in 2 seconds with a high degree of accuracy who watches these shows and who doesn't, the producers are that good at attracting a certain intellect and predictable response. If this show is your form of titillation then enjoy it I am no threat to you nor is my opinion. The vast majority of people that I know believe the people in that show cross the line in their demonstrations and that is all it is is a demonstration their actions have no real effect whaling will continue as long as their is a need to do so and that is reality. Try living in the real world not Animal Planets' version of it.

I don't watch whale wars mainly because I think the people are idiots who are endangering lives with their tactics.

However, they have had a real effect on whaling, shutting down this year's season early.

In the real world, Japan and Norway do commercial whaling, although Japan denies that it is doing it for commercial purposes.

In the real world, there is an international ban on commercial whaling.

In the real world, mercury is pervasive in the environment, mostly due to industrial contamination. It builds in the food chain, which is why fish is particularly problematic. Most large fish eat other fish, it is one of the few predatory animals that most American's eat on a regular basis.

In the real world, other countries have different cultural values, environmental standards and transparency of government.

There may be more important issues in the world than mercury poisoning or whaling, but most people focus on solving the problems that are important to them. The differences in what we value and think worthwhile are one of the things that makes people so interesting.

While I do think the "whale war" folks are idiots. I do admire their passion. It is people like them who change the world.
