April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

Pics
My leghorn is singing the eggs song. But it sounds more like she's yelling the coops on fire and they're all gonna die! She's a drama queen lol
One of my leghorns is really ba-gawking a lot today! No egg so far, except another from the Sebright today. She's a tiny egg machine...
We had a grasshopper festival earlier...I was mowing the lawn and going round and round until there was only a small strip left, which is where all the grasshoppers fled to. So I got off the mower and used a net to scoop up a jar full of them. I took them into the run and let them out! That was my entertainment today...and the chickens' as well. Probably most 66 yr old grandmas don't do this...well who knows, maybe BYC grandmas do, lol, ....anyway it was fun. :)

If I wasn't scared to death of grasshoppers I'd do that. I let my girls free range and they dig up along the runs and chase the hoppers and any other bug they can get ahold of!

No need to catch bugs for them when they are out doing it themselves....lol.
I have planned to let ours free range, that's why I got leghorns, because I read they are good at evading predators.... But there's now a pair of great horned owls close by, and they even hunt by day. So I don't know.....

I'd be leary free reading with the bird birds hunting. We use to have a ton of hawks but I've not seen any in months. I leave the run door open and they go in and out as they please.

We got two new chickens today! Not sure if they count for the contest or not, but they were born in April. They are 20 weeks old, so the same age as our current 4 (they will be 20 weeks on Monday). They were sold to us as a Mottled Java and a Buckeye. We suspect the Mottled Java is actually a Cuckoo Marans. But, we are happy with her either way. We have named the Buckeye Mary and the other chicken is named Turkey (boyfriend named that one).
