April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

Guys... I got 4/4 from my new layers! I'm so proud of them!

The 4 blues are from my new gals. One is tiny, but hey, an egg is an egg! They were hatched on April 3rd

I went out after dark and the Sebright was still on the nest. I picked her up and put her on a roost. It's going to be in the 40's tonite, the cool air will hopefully break the broodiness...if that's what's happening.

I didnt think they usually go broody til after their first winter? Maybe me brain is playin tricks on me lol!

Right, I don't know. But she didn't go back.. Maybe she was just trying out the feeling...anyway, I don't have a rooster yet. So any hint of broodiness is going to be nipped in the bud!

I

Is she sleeping in there? Kicked off the roost?

Yeah she is. Ugh. My stupid chickens don't roost on the bars. They follow the bars and sleep on a higer shelf. ( Green tote is no longer there since they were pooping on it). I have a wall of roost on the other side of the coop damnit!

And the pecking order is changing. So looks like she is taking a liking to the nesting boxes...

I would block off the boxes 1/2 before bedtime and open up again in the morning, go in just at dark/roost time and put any birds not on roost on the roost. Rinse and repeat until they are roosting on their own

1/6 today, a leghorn....however the Sebright who didn't lay, does appear to be broody...I take her off the nest and she returns, screeching at intruders. I looked up BYC thread discussing 'can young pullets go broody right after starting to lay', and the answer was "OH yeah!" So I could have a mama by Oct if I find her some hatching eggs. I am going to a poultry swap tomorrow, and also the famous Chicken Pageant in Diamond, MO, and try to find some fertile bantam eggs for Moonshine.
Another option is getting her some day old chicks in 3 weeks if she stays broody, and see if shee'll accept them ...I talked to a local hatchery, and yes, they'll have Sebright chicks on Sept 29 .....grafting chicks is a gamble tho. Well everything is a gamble, lol.
