April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

Pics
1/6 today, a leghorn....however the Sebright who didn't lay, does appear to be broody...I take her off the nest and she returns, screeching at intruders. I looked up BYC thread discussing 'can young pullets go broody right after starting to lay', and the answer was "OH yeah!" So I could have a mama by Oct if I find her some hatching eggs. I am going to a poultry swap tomorrow, and also the famous Chicken Pageant in Diamond, MO, and try to find some fertile bantam eggs for Moonshine.
Another option is getting her some day old chicks in 3 weeks if she stays broody, and see if shee'll accept them ...I talked to a local hatchery, and yes, they'll have Sebright chicks on Sept 29 .....grafting chicks is a gamble tho. Well everything is a gamble, lol.

Such a lil overachiever lady. Lol! Layin days in a row then decidin she is gonna be a big girl maman.

I was out garden dusting some butts and Tucks redeemed herself! My first faverolles egg,and yeah after she finished I dusted her butt too.:)

0/6 today
BUT I got some hatching eggs from someone at the poultry swap!! They are Dutch bantams....i removed the fake egg she was sitting on and carefully inserted the fertile eggs. Moonshine happily settled down upon them, carefully tucking them beneath her....We shall see if they hatch in 3 weeks.

Just found this "contest" when looking for info on when to expect first eggs. I have 4 RIR; 3 BR and 2 Gold Lace Wyandottes all hatched on 4/17, so I guess from the timing I'm seeing in your posts I still have a few weeks to go. About half of them have very red, well-developed combs, but the others are still pinkish. Guess some are maturing faster than others. We are in the projected path of Irma, so I hope that doesn't stress them so much it delays their laying! I moved their entire coop/run into our large pole barn/shed so that we can close the door and protect them from flying debris, winds and rain.

Welcome!!
My RIR hatched 4/12 & started laying last week. It's been a little stressful here with all the heat & wildfires, but she's been laying perfect 30gm eggs every other day without fail. I'm amazed at how resilient the girls are!

My BR hatched 4/19 & I think will lay any day now. Her comb & wattles are pretty red & large & she's been singing the egg song.

The EE -- well that's anybody's guess. She does things in her own time & way. I'm just relieved she's not a rooster. Had us guessing for a while there.

The point is, my girls were born around the same time & are laying or close, so you have hope!

I hope you & all the ladies stay safe!

Saturday morning( since its now Sunday) We had 5 eggs. 4/5 from the new girls as one of my Welsummers laid her first egg this morning. Its a light brown with speckles.
2/3 Orpingtons also laid today. So I got 5 eggs this morning. One of the Orps laid in the afternoon. Giving us a grand total of 6.
6 eggs out of 8 birds not a bad morning at all. Come on Sunday I want a omelet.
