April 2017 chicks, who will lay first contest...

No luck here on all laying, but....I got a rooster for my girls!! He's a bantam Cochin cockerel, 6 months old. His name is Carl. He has a nice musical crow. They aren't sure yet about him, but that should change. Hopefully.

Well its still 4/5 but I just got a sign that number 5 is near today i was rounding everyone up getting everyone back into the coop because my 3 girls that are a year older than them but only been with us a little over a month have been moved in to the big coop cuz I had to isolated my rooster cuz he has been a bad boy so he is in the small coop where the older 3 are use to laying so it has been a egg hunt for 2 of the eggs so everyone has to be cooped up to get them adjusted to laying in there but the last one of the spring chicks left to lay saw me coming to grab her to get her back in the coop an squatted before I even got to her and didn't even move til I picked her up

I wanted to give a quick update. We have 5 out of 6 chickens laying (Mary is still living rent free).

Important Note for other Newbies-our chickens are sick:
Before we got our chickens I took a backyard chicken class. This class taught me the basics of raising a small backyard flock. One of the recommendations was to get in contact with a vet (they had a vet they recommended for chickens) and take in a fecal sample for a fecal float test in the Fall and Spring. This would be to check for worms and to make sure the flock is healthy. Well, I've noticed a couple of our chickens have looked a tiny bit skinnier than they should be. I thought with it getting closer to winter they should start looking fluffier. I remembered what they guys said about this fecal float test. So, today I took in their samples and the outcome surprised me. They did not have worms, however, they have a mild-moderate case of coccidia. It's suspected the 2 new pullets we bought a couple of months ago brought it in with them. We now have medication and the birds will be treated over the next 7 days. I am just really happy it was caught early and we shouldn't lose any birds. It helps to be diligent and monitor your flock (even if your other half thinks you are being paranoid-which I am, but it paid off this time).

Been awhile, and I'm sure everyone's excitement has died down. But I have yet to see eggs from some of my April chicks. Lol. Looks like the welsummers are starting to lay the last few days. I get a pink egg sporadically, probably from the SLW. And I lost a EE to a predator this week. So 9 hens. Getting 2-3 eggs a day. Hopefully there will be a huge boom in spring.
