April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

So Giganto the raccoon went and told his buddy about the chicken pen and we now have 2 raccoons visiting on a nightly basis (I have seen them on the cow cam). I have been setting 2 live traps nightly for 3 nights now. I have caught a raccoon in my FIL's coyote trap every night....but it always finds a way to get the door open and escape. They have also went into the regular raccoon trap every night and eaten all the bait....but never set it off. Man they are a smart set of raccoons. I have ordered some dog safe raccoon traps to try instead. 🤞🤞🤞that they work!

Success!! She was running ragged for over an hour, but, I finally realized she needed a roof. I moved her into my open front brooder, where she can see out of but be in with the rest of the group, but its got hardware cloth on one entire side and the front. I blocked off the entire front view but forgot the top. Once I made her a nice little cave, she sat right down. :)

I just candled the eggs, and half have started drawdown and have movement in the air cell, no internal pips yet. Slow down babies, give my procrastination some time!!!

Im going to wait a couple more hours and go ahead and move them out before dark so I can make SURE she is sitting.

And we are up to 2 gosling's! I was worried. I haven't incubated anything in yesterday and I've never done any water fowl and I've heard geese eggs are hard. 2/8 have hatched. Keeping my fingers crossed for the rest.

I was worried I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Toulouse and Toulouse/ Chinese crosses. I think it's pretty obvious with the black feet and beak!

I'm sorry :hugs

What temp and humidity were you at during lockdown?

Were are these shipped eggs? Sometimes shipped eggs do this. Sometimes it's the breeding stock, sometimes it's from shipping, and sometimes it's just because.

Your next hatch will be way better

they were shipped. I seem to be having difficulty with shipped eggs this year. I have more in that were packagedperfectlyand out of 15 I’m down to 6 I think so far.
I’m glad I did a candle today though as when I checked the duck eggs from my own flock I saw 5 or 6 internal peeps. (I forgot to mark the calendar for them) so they’re in lock down. I really hope to get a few Delaware’s out of the other shipped eggs. I really wanted them to be able to breed my own meat birds. I think humidity was at 45% and temperature around 98 or so? I trynot to pay to much attention so I don’t go crazy stressing.

So i have my geese eggs in a little giant. One of the goslings ( toulouse/chinese) keeps stretching and messing with the wires on the heating element. It was hatched out 10 hours ago but not fluffy. will it be okay? or should I go ahead and take it out and put it under a heat lamp? I just don't want it messing around and getting hurt.

Do it. Make sure he has a warm spot. He'll dry faster out of the humidity. My duckies did.

I would leave them in there it hasn't even been 24 hours yet.

How long do you think I should wait? I'm just anxious because now the first one has been in there 36 hours. The second hatched has been in 24 hours. There are two eggs left.. I thought I remember someone saying something about Marans taking longer to hatch but I can't' remember. The one is a BCM.

If its been 36 hours then go ahead and take them out. i misread an thought it wasn't even 24 hours. just be quic. you dont want humity dropping too much with eggs still in there.

Day 18
Hi all! I’m on lockdown as of 12 this afternoon. I tried candling at day 12 but my isa brown eggs were 2 dark to see anything. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. My humidity is 73 on lockdown. Time will tell. Just installed a new heat source for the brooder. Everything is clean n ready to go. Hoping to have some pictures for all of you in a few days ...

D14 was a couple days ago - removed 3 very early quitters, I think all from the same mom. That brings me down to 14 eggs. Remaining eggs are doing great and I am loving this Govee hygrometer so much I bought two more for my other incubators!

We have been so incredibly busy - congratulations to everyone with chicks/ducklings/quail/goslings! 😍

The weather here turned for the better so we have been outside all day every day (I didn't even wear a jacket today! 50 ish degrees and I am so pumped about it haha. Installed a low tunnel in the garden (it gets to almost 100 degrees in there if I don't open it up 😳), expanded the perimeter fence of the garden and added deer fence to it, rehung the gate.

Today we picked up four 6-week old guinea keets. Anybody else think they look like skeksis?
