April 2020 Hatch-A-Long! All are welcome!

They were tending to spread out along the edges of the brooder, when they slept... which is why I was under the impression it was probably too hot. I never noticed any open mouth breathing or obvious signs of heat issues. And god knows I’ve been spending way too much time looking at them 😬 The brooder is large enough that they had plenty of space to roam. But it really was such a warm bulb. It heated up my entire 10x12 mudroom!

I also don’t want to inhibit feather growth by keeping it too toasty. I briefly read somewhere that it can cause them to feather out more slowly
(no idea if that’s true or not).

Thanks for your helpful response! 😊
I think your assessment is spot on. Sounds like those littles are in good hands!

Okay I have some sad news overnight my cat got into the incubater and ate one chick but we need to focus on whats alive

Even though my cat got this one it's still alive it seems to only have a bit of blood on it when the cat got it, it had a pip should I help it out or wait
I'm not sure yet if its shrink wrapped

I have an update the egg is shrink wrapped or close to it but I think I have it under control I have removed the peices of shell that were poking in to it

Hi everyone! I’ve got some serama, Japanese bantam, and crele bantam eggs in the incubator. It’s day 8 and so far 9/12 are doing wonderfully. Hand turning with a contraption I made for help 😂

1- no sign of development
1- early death (got a nice blood ring going)
1* - not sure about this one I thought there was a blood ring but there are still veins???? And I thought I didn’t see movement but after I looked at it for a bit I think I did? (Obviously losing my mind :barnie)
For the one you are questioning, I'd just check it again on D10.

Is the chick making any chewing motions? Chewing motions would indicate that the chick is still absorbing yolk/blood. Get a q tip and very gently rub the exposed membrane with triple antibiotic ointment (no pain relief) or coconut oil or olive oil. This will make the membrane translucent - if you see lots of blood vessels the chick needs more time before coming out of the egg. Because of the damage to the egg, I would think that the chick is going to have a hard time coming out on its own (nowhere to zip!) and will need some minor assistance. Make sure you have clean hands and sterile tools if you assist, and if you see any blood stop. Apply gentle pressure with q-tip and wait.

Update I went with my gut and got it out alive its now in the incubater it has a small scratch from the cat but I think if I would've left it in the shell it would die

I can say with confidence that this will be my last hatch ever out of my current incubator. There is absolutely no reason I should have had a glued chick. Humidity is perfect, wouldn’t dare open the top. Ugh. Luckily everyone else, so I thought (story below) was hatched. Glued baby is out, no idea how long it was like that. Was not pipped last night, but glued this morning.

I thought my sweet little Viva, the one with the nail polish crack didn’t make it, I was going to candle for movement, picked up the egg and got a very loud peep! She pipped on the side towards the floor, right on her nail polish crack! I helped her about half way, and put her back to finish herself.

I had 1 egg pip in the middle of the shell last night. I wish I would have checked on it in the middle of the night, although there probably wasn’t anything I could have done to know. It was DIS this morning. It suffocated while trying to zip. It was malpositioned upside down. I’ve never had this happen, and it’s so sad to find.😢 The other egg that didn’t make it died sometime early lockdown.

On a happy note, I have 6 little chicks from 10 shipped eggs, and 1 was cracked! Can’t wait till they’re all fluffed up!!

So sorry you've been having a difficult time! The babies that did hatch look so, so cute, though!
