April 2021 Hatch - A - Long

Pics
You learn something every hatch.😊
Your chances are better, not being shipped. You can put a little nail polish on the cracks to seal them.
they are less like cracks and more like fractures I guess, there is no noticeable shell distortion or crack, you only see it under great lighting or when candling. so I figured i'd leave them be. so far they are developing well. I've marked them to identify later after hatch to see if there are any disparities.

Here she is! Frankie the Fabulous.
Hatched last June, she started laying at 18 1/2 weeks and hasn’t missed a single day since. Lays large tinted eggs. She hatched out of a medium brown egg. After many posts here on BYC, came to the conclusion that she’s half red sex link and half leghorn. She’s my friendliest chicken as well and still enjoys lap time.🥰View attachment 2580428View attachment 2580429

Candling daily does not hurt anything. Remember a broody hen will get off the nest 1-2 times day for up to an hour.
Whenever somebody says not to candle or touch the incubator at all because it hurts the eggs, I always think of a broody hen getting up to eat and drink and poop! Thank you for supporting this!

Day 4 for these. I did pull a few clears, and probably will still have to pull more, but they are developing.

@LadiesAndJane

any input for a first time hatcher of silkie eggs? Maybe peculiarities? Or commonly need to assist hatching. Anything like that? I’m going to try and be more hands off than I was last time.

last go around I had all 9 develop but only 5 make it to hatch and I think that may in part be because I was frequently inspecting.
I have found my silkies the best to hatch, a lot of people say dry hatching but I’m too scared to try until I have a steady flow of my own silkie eggs as I tried it before with another breed (20-30% humidity then 65 at lockdown) and I had a terrrrtible hatch rate.
I have already hatched one dozen silkies and I only lost one during hatch! I do 40ish humidity and weigh/monitor air cells every 4-5 days, then 65 at lockdown. Out of all my Hatcher’s I have the best rates with my silkies....some do like to take their time from pip to start zipping

@LowcoMatt I just thought of something!

In my recent hatch there were a couple silkie chicks and because their back fluff dried odd I thought they were still wet so I left them in the incubator. It was fine in the end, but I think I stretched them to the limit of their 72 hour food supply. Just something to keep in mind; they're aren't always wet!
