The barnyard mixes went to their new home today, so I am getting ready for the dominiques and the ducks that will hatch this weekend. 7 cayuga ducks, all looking great, and 2.5 dozen doms.

How do you guys clean your styrofoam incubators? Since I am hatching eggs from different people I am concerned about cross-contamination. Can the bottom half go in the dishwasher?

I would say no, it would melt. I use hot soapy water, then spray down with Clorox clean up, wipe off and rinse and then let it completely air dry so any chemicals evaporate.

My chicks are 2 days old

We're about halfway into our incubation, maybe a little more with chicks due around thu next week but I have a question. My broody appears to have cracked an egg open and maybe eaten what's inside. I can only assume since all that's left us a shell and I know there's no way a check has hatched. Chickens don't have preemie babies. And I know another hen did this a while back. Do they do this when/if they know an egg is not fertilized? That's the only thing I can come up with. But what do I know? Can anyone answer my questions. Inquiring minds wants to know.

Thanks!

I know that with gerbils, if the mother runs out of a water source, she'll eat one of the babies so she can continue to produce milk for the rest of the litter.
Perhaps your hen was hungry but too devoted to go out and forage for insects?
