APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

Somebody mentioned using a cellphone flashlight to candle dark Marans eggs... I'd not thought of that, I just assumed they were too dark. So of course I had to jump right up and try it.
Day It's only day 10 for me, what should I be looking for? All I could make out was a shadow towards the fat end, taking up about 2/3 of the egg. Is it safe to assume that's a developing embryo?

If you shine the light into the air sac, look for some veining close to the edges and I would say it's safe to assume they are developing nicely. If you can't see veins, wait a few days and look to see if the blob has grown. The farther along they develop the harder it is to see. At that point your just going on dark space vs light space

Been up to my elbows all morning in chick hatching drama. I'm in shrink wrap city!!!! Taking a quick break, I have 5 now I know will make it, 7 died before I opened them, 1 so far died after assist, but was in breach position couldn't locate the beak in time to save it.

Does it count if I'm doing it the old fashion way? No incubator just big mama! I have thirteen that should hatch the 22 of April! Sooooooo excited!!!!!!!!!!

You sound like what i see CS in my tan or blue eggs.
Sounds about right though 3/4 of the egg dark day 10.thats when i candle. You can mark the egg where you see the dark line then when you candle next it should be past that line .I candle day 10 and 17 right before lockdown
17 it should be all dark or dark but for a small air space at the big end
Maybe its my eyes but I have only seen veins about twice out of I don't know how many hatches 20? 30? IDK

So don't pitch because you dont see veining If your eggs are white maybe they show up a lot better than other colors but my tan or blues forget it Ive used 3 or 4 different flash lights to see more..oh well.

Alright, I finally got some pictures uploaded. These ones are of my first chick to hatch Tuesday night.

Zipping:

It's an itty-bitty wing!

Out she comes, complaining quite loudly:

Resting up a moment:

Off she goes to see what the big world has to offer her (with shell stuck to her back LOL):
HAHAHA LOVE the pic of her on her back GREAT PHOTOS!!

Update on the 5 dozen mixed flock eggs I hatched for someone else. Most are EE and Maran crosses. They all go to their new home tomorrow.

Started with almost 7 dozen eggs. Tossed about 2 dozen at the beginning because they were clear, lost one or two on the way to blood rings or failed development.

Got to hatch day with a little less than 5 dozen. 42 hatched on their own but I think one of them is going to pass because his egg yolk wasn't absorbed and as the hours passed it only got worse. I tied it off and snipped it so that it would stop catching on things, but now I think he has developed an infection/peritonitis. He is separated from the rest. I had to assist 3 chicks who got a little shrink-wrapped. Two are doing perfectly fine now but one passed overnight. He looked odd to me. His head looked large and bulbous and I am thinking he may have had hydrocephalus.

8 eggs have not hatched yet and don't seem to have any movement. I candled them and they look fully developed but there are no internal pips. I will leave them in the incubator until tomorrow night, which will be day 24 or 25. Gotta get it cleaned for the ducks and chicks hatching this coming weekend!
