I still have 9 or 10 in icu, of those several are definitely not going to make it, one almost surely isn't, but has genetics I have been working on for 2 years so I am going against my hard core survival of the fittest and going to do heroic measures to try and save him, but it is most surely an exercise in futility. I think I have about 10 in the make shift hatcher now, most are strong considering, there are 2 I'm still guarded about.

How do you know when a hatch is going bad and it's time to intervene? I had 1 hatch in March and another dead chick in the egg.

Right now, I've got two chicks out and several more pipping, but haven't seen a lot of action for a while. My kids are excited because there is NO school today. LOL

For me since I know my incubator does this I watch pip activity if it stalls for 8ish hours or so I know there is a problem.

During this hatch several eggs pipped just before I went to bed, when I woke up two that had not pipped the night before were completely hatched and the others that had pipped had made ABSOLUTELY NO PROGRESS they looked identical to the way they did when I went to bed, so I took those out one at a time and opened and confirmed shrink wrap. In my experience once shrink wrap happens to one it is basically happening to all, so I took the ones out one at a time that I saw pips on then the rest. I had 3 late quitters, 4 died in the shell from shrink wrapping w/o internal pipping one breach position that died before I could find it's beak at assist, I have about 7 (best guess) in icu that won't make it that I assisted, they were all shrink wrapped but not ready yet to hatch, could have used another 12 ish hours. My special one that I am doing heroic measures on had a herniated abdomen, it isn't going to make it, it needed another 12 ish hours to finish.

But even w/ all the failure today I will end up w/ 14 ish chicks I didn't have yesterday, and 12 ish chicks that would have died had I not intervened.

What about your incubator makes this happen? I have a teeny brinsea mini advance, but the eggs on one side of the incubator seem to hatch before the others. Is this something to investigate further.

I'm so impressed that you changed your number of chicks so dramatically. How is it going/did it go with the one with the genetics you were working on?

Hello Everyone.....I was on the March Hatch-a-long thread, and thought I would jump on over since my last hatch went into lockdown today. I see that many of you are still hatching too!! I have 15 BYM and 13 Bantam Cochin in this last set. Wish I could have had a few Manans though.

Hi all! :)
Just set 41 eggs this morning. 12 Olive Eggers, 18 Bielefelders & 11 Malines (new blood line) This is my first hatch with a Brinsea. So excited! :)

700

Also setting 41 eggs of Malines from my own flock in my Genesis.
Good luck with your hatch! I love the Brinsea products and I'm sure you will too. I use the mini advance and the eco glow brooder and swear by them both. I've also hatched out of a friends octagon advance when I went egg buying crazy (the mini keeps my chicken math in check) and the octagon was just as easy to use. They take a lot of the worry out of hatching eggs.

I think I have either 13 or 14 out of the woods in the brooder, more tired then most new chicks, but I think are well on their way to surviving hatch. I have 7 still in icu, including the special one. I have done everything possible for those, but do not think they will survive.

I think it is the fan so close to the eggs, it is also very hard to keep humidity up in it. It is a brinsea eco 20.

@Kassaundra I feel bad for you that you are going to lose so many. That sounds really hard. Before my hatch I was reading about assisted hatching and it was stressful simply reading about it. Bravo to you for saving as many as you have.

Thanks, the way I look at it, I have 13 more chicks today then I had yesterday. Even if I lose my special bird, I have had much bigger set backs to my project this year then that. I have some good genetics in this and the previous hatch to this to build on, so it's all good.
