APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

Some were supposed to be sold on Easter buy we aren't doing anything for Easter anymore so now I'm just going to have a bunch of chicks.
I don't like the idea of selling checks for Easter either :)
I'm pretty sure in several weeks/months, people will be looking for started pellets for eggs since it'll be closer to summer and people are thinking about how they want to improve their garden. I don't garden, so it's entirely possible that I'm wrong?

I'm not sure. I haven't had birds in the spring. Started pullets are always in demand in some areas and the boys have a date with the freezer

Good luck to all still having hatching chicks.Ill re watching for sute pics.

Sclark .....Where did you get the colored markers you have on the their legs that small? What size are they or do they have sizes?I thought they all came bigger.

.
They are kids hair bands from family dollar or dollar tree and they work wonderfully. You have to double wrap it for the fresh chicks but very easy to remove with a side cutters or scissors when you need. I used to use colored zip ties but they have no give and are harder to remove.

Just put 17 eggs in lock down, mix of BLRW, SS, EE and BYM from a different neighboring farmer which is Lav Orps and BLRW mixes. Just set another 22 EE, BLRW and SS. I'm now up to my 11th batch set so far. In 2 days I have a big batch to lock down of over 30. I'm seriously looking into buying a cabinet incubator if I continue to be insane with hatching chicks. I've been putting the word out all over to sell these chicks, I'm keeping the BLRW until I know they are good enough to sell. They come from Foley stock, but I've seen others that say they are Foley and are very poor quality. My hens and roos are nice looking but who knows what lingering defects could pop up at any time. I won't be hatching anymore barn yard chicks unless someone requests them. I want to mainly stick to my pure flocks. I honestly have no idea what the heck I'm doing other than I want to raise good stock of SS and BLRW to sell but I get carried away with the obsession of hatching chicks and need to control the addiction. I still find it amazing with every chick that hatches on how the process is.

Im back talking about this hatch........ again ....day 25 folks! last night sometime another chick hatched. need to figure if its the silky egg i saw pipping before bed or another .This is the longest hatch ever but i did put one or 2 eggs in a day or 2 late. The huge Baby Hugey chick is still alive. Not sure how hes doing if he can walk was sleeping last i looked. He was assisted.. figures.

I finally have the internet fixed and can respond, :woot

Those of you w/ questions about Rudy, the naked chick.  He is not unwell or handicapped by genetics.  His nakedness is from a known, natural genetic inheiritance.  I have in my flock carriers of the Sc gene, it was first discovered over 60 years ago in a line of New Hampshire birds.  I did not know I had the ability to hatch out a naked chick this time b/c I did not know I had a female carrier, I knew I had the male carrier, but to have a naked chick you have to have 2 carriers.

This gene affects the skin in that it removes all feather follicles and all scales, so his feet have only skin, no scales, and if he is a boy he will not develop spurs as they are modified scales.  He will never grow feathers since he has no follicles to do so, some Sc chickens can be hatched that have some like on the head or down the spine, they will grow feathers in those areas, but he was hatched w/o any except maybe one on each elbow.

Rudy's problems at hatch are from his early forced hatch b/c of shrink wrapping during the last day of incubation.  If the shrink wrapping had not happened and he had been allowed to hatch normally he would not have had any of these problems.

I would love to see pics of him as he grows up, so interesting :)
