We went into lockdown today,,,anyone else?

I did with three goose eggs. I have a question though. Is high humidity or low humidity more dangerous for developing chicks. Not the ones in lockdown

For those who responded to my plea I thank you. That was good advice on all parts and something I'll remember for the future. I regretfully share that the little guy didn't make it through the day.

I suppose that Nature did take care of it for me. Darn shame because I was starting to like that little guy... RIP little buddy.

That's always how it seems to happen. I can totally sympathize with you. Here's a happy story though that I thought of thinking of the little babies I've tried to save. When I got my first batch of chickens I was thrilled. I had eighty little guys and girls that I was taking care of. When they were old enough we put them in a chicken tractor for some free ranging. Well it rained and not all of the beasties were smart enough to go in. So when I come out I have a half dead little chick that's soaking wet. I gave him some TLC and got him warmed up and now he's the biggest, baddest, most obnoxious rooster i have.

On another note. Out of my first hatch only three made it because my lockdown box gave out. At the same time I had a hen who went broody over 1 egg. We gave the chicks to her along with six others from tsc. She is a very good mama. I might be getting a few more chickens for her as well because one died. Now comes hopefully three goslings.

Day 23. Only two of 9 Marans eggs hatched, on day 19, one of which has died.
Two hatches, two Marans, one of which is 4 weeks old and is pretty obviously a little roo. Sigh. Not having a good time with hatching my own eggs. 4 out of 24, 3 live chicks.

My situation was nearly the exact same. 22 eggs, 13 made it to day 18, 5 hatched, 3 live!

I'm not sure I want to continue.
However, I have an idea for next time that may yield better results.

To help figure out what may be the problem can I ask some questions?

How old were the eggs when you put them in (meaning how long did you store them)?

Have you calibrated your thermometer?

Do you have a hygrometer and have you calibrated it?

What kind of incubator and have you used it before...with what results?

What was the humidity level during incubation...?...during lockdown?

I'm not trying to be nosy or anything but I like the idea that we can help each other figure out what might be going wrong so we can tweak our process and get better results.


Same questions for you, goodb...I've done several hatches and I am not an expert but I've been adjudting things and slowly getting better and better results.

my first try with my still air incubator I placed15 eggs and only three hatched tried again with 15 more eggs this time I have six chicks I think it has to do with your humidityI haven't purchased a humidity reader which I think I will have next time I hatch eggs.
