APRIL Hatch a long ......Anyone?

my second try Easter

Analog and digital thermometer, both calibrated; hygrometer calibrated. As these were thick membranes Marans eggs, I went with dry incubation, then upped humidity after lock down. Weighing shows about a 13% weightloss. After first failed hatch, I opened up all the failed eggs, to find one dead embryo about 75% developed, and a dozen scrambled yolks. Giving current hatch till day 25, just in case, though the fact that the others hatched early and there's been nothing since is not a good sign. So far it seems I've just had two batches damaged from shipping. From now on I'm only going with eggs from local breeders.
Also, last year I placed 17 mail ordered eggs under a broody hen, only 4 hatched.

I'm on my first hatch and have a dozen Marans. I can see babies inside kind of or at least I hope. I'm on day 15. What did your Marans look like when you candled? I think if mine don't hatch I'm expecting they died during hatching but most of yours seem like they didn't develop?

Here is a pic of Rudy today, he has come so far, wish I had taken pics of how he looked at hatch and during his ICU stay to really show how far he has come.

As you can see by that crop, s/he has a healthy appetite! lol

Hi CSWolfe your info and knowledge on the marans eggs seems so great ...can ya help/advise me?

I have a broody hen who I just ordered 8 fertilized eggs for and I was only going to give her 4 to set on and incubate the rest or possibly give the remaining 4 to a friend with a broody Orp...but I saw that you put all 17(I think ) that you once ordered under your broody hen and had only 4 successful hatches...

So now i am re-guessing my plan based on your previous experience and insight...

So I was wondering now given those odds that you used and that the marans apparently have these membranous eggs and are tough hatchers ...should I give all 8 fertilized eggs I've ordered to my broody hen to set? How many eggs is the max # eggs a hen can set on realistically?

The hen is a good size Australorp/Auracana mutt who makes wonderful olive eggs and she is about a year old now and if I had to guess she is roughly average size at 5lbs and excellent health...and I have culled all my Roos within the last year but I want to cure her bloodiness and add some marans as a bonus...I want to add the infamous 'chocolate eggs' to be repertoire as I sell my eggs locally :)

Thoughts? Discuss?
And my personal email is debquint@gmail if that is easier for reply :)

Please, thanks, and bok bok bok :)

Tomorrow is day 18. So do you usually candle the eggs today(day 17) and put them into lock down tomorrow or do you candle and then lock down tomorrow?

All I saw when candling was a black mass, no detail. That's what makes this so hard, I can't see anything till I open them up.

5/7 silkie/frizzles hatched. I'll wait an extra day to see if the others are on their way. 4/5 are black with some having white chins- so cute! And since I only have 1 black roo I know who the daddy is, the momma is anyone's guess.
