OK so I am new to BYC and incubating! I set my 14 shipped eggs today after resting them blunt end up for 24 hours. Now after reading about the no turn theory for shipped eggs it is "to turn or not to turn..." Anyway I have 3 Easter Eggers, 1 Black Copper Maran, 1 Blue Maran, 3 Barred Rock, 3 Rhode Island Reds, and 3 Australorp due to hatch April 12th. I sure hope they are punctual or 2 days late I have a wedding to go to on the 13th, I would hate to miss the big event!

Day 2 of incubation and I already had to pull a Cream Legbar egg that was sweating. I've never had one leak this early! The egg was pretty dirty though.

I wait 3 days before turning shipped eggs. Everyone had their own theories, but that's what has worked for me.

Maybe the dirt was hiding a crack or a chip in the egg? That does seem fast.......
I actually have 22 eggs in the 'bator. The last egg of the day was just too pretty to pass up. This am we have a foot of snow and 10 degrees...., no chicken in her right mind would be setting now!

MadamContrary - I love your name! Guaranteed the the egg hatching WILL mess with your plans! It just is the way it goes. LOL!

Newbie here.. First time hatching.

I set 10 silkie eggs yesterday in a homemade incubator. It's steady at 99-100 degrees (thermometer only measures whole degrees) with 41% humidity right now.

I have to say, I love this site! It has been my main source of information, which means a lot since I knew NOTHING about chickens 10 days ago.. lol

I'm doing the best I can and hoping for some chicks on April 13th, which happens to be my boyfriend's birthday.

I have a banty going broody too! I'm going to stick some eggs under her and see if she stays put. So far she's nest hopping...

Have just started saving eggs from my poor lonely sole KC duck. Lost my drake two weeks ago, and when I noticed her eggs were still fertile a couple days back I thought Why not? Will be my second time incubating poultry - and the first batch (chickens) is not yet in lockdown, so I will have all the worries and troubles of both setting duck eggs for the first time and worrying about a staggered set. Will be trying to figure out a barrier to keep hatching chicks off the single turning rack I plan to leave in. Thinking about using plastic canvas. Will probably set the duck eggs in the next few days. So much to learn!
