April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

My first broody hen last year was just evil when I got near the nest, but I learned I could put a plastic cup over her head quickly and be able to reach under her to get the extra eggs (she was in with the other hens until she hatched, so they still kept trying to lay in her box sometimes). But my other two have been so sweet and will even let me mess with the baby's and not worry. My latest broody just hatched yesterday and I ended up having to take the other two eggs cause she got off the nest ( though I think one of the older chicks from a previous hatch, ran her out trying to get warm) w her one chick with a pipped egg! So I hatched the pipped one this morning in the bator and currently have the other one rocking in my bator. I moved the one I hatched back out with her a couple hours ago.
I might try that one!! I sure would like to candle them to see what is going on. I was just gonna do 3 eggs but my husband wanted to add one more, so there are 4 eggs under her right now. I am hoping that moving her will help reduce any possible problems that my arise. There should only be about a week between both hatches.
When do I need to put them out with the others?

A week apart might be hard to pull, cause she will leave the egg to go w the other ones. You could try to place it after it hatches and is walking around good, but she might reject it, so have a brooder ready in case.

i'd like to join this incubating and hatching party! last night at 12:20am i plugged in my incubator and egg turner added water for humidity and the set 30 button quail eggs in the turner. they should hatch April 13th. i'm receiving 30+ more tomorrow or saturday and after they settle for 12 hours or so i place them in the bator with the others and they should hatch the 14th or 15th depending on which day they arrive

I just did my day 7 candling. Out of 36 eggs, I pulled 18. Some clear, LOTS of blood rings. I'm so annoyed. Granted, it's always a risk with shipped eggs, but seriously? Plus, of the remaining developing eggs, a lot of them looked really strange, almost like they had air cells at both ends? Has anyone ever seen anything like that?

Well, so far I am pretty sure that I will not get addicted to incubation. This is crazy. Temps are constantly up and down. Everytime I pick up an egg I end up dropping it. Can't see through brown eggs. No rhyme nor reason for any of it. Driving me bonkers. I know the Little Giant Still Air is supposed to be basic and oftentimes unreliable, but this is ridiculous. Do the more expensive incubators give you just as much grief?
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I bought a brinsea 20 advanced and at first I though WOW a lot of hype for this little thing!!!! and was a bit put off even though I got a deal on it..... but then we got a mistake order of eggs and ended up with a loaner still air incubator I have nick named "the piece of C*** bator" temps are all over the place, I can not get the humidy up at all.. and YES im monerting it like a hawk ... and yes im going crazy

... meanwhile the brinsea is GOLD.... perfect temp and humidy and when I check the eggs it regains correct temp in 30 sec and humidy in about a min.!!

I do not want to hatch in my brinsea incubator..... What can I do!!!!????

I HAVE a sill air incubator see above post ... it sucks!
but if the eggs dont need to be turned and are less sensitive to temp change right before hatch then could I just move them over one day early or should I wait until the first one starts to hatch? Im sure I could get humidy up with a sponge accross the bottem and maybe mist the eggs if nessassary.... or would that be bad?

I have 2 still air LG's. I use the one with the turner for incubating. Then at lockdown I move them over to bator #2. I cover the wire mesh with clushy drawer liner. This cleans up easier and leaves my "incubating bator" clean from all the hatching debris and fluff, and if I'm staggering my hatches its obviously just easier.

I incubated in my brinsea, hatched in a LG still air. 7 out of 7 duck eggs, about half for my chicken eggs. However more like 4 sponges and plenty of hot water to keep humidity up. Doing it all over again for April!

I think my thermometer is also whacky! The cheap thermometer I picked up at meyer hatchery isn't anywhere close to the LG thermometer/hygrometer readings. I think I may wake up each morning to poached eggs.

I currently have have 4 thermostats! Yup neurotic! However everyone says something different. I have the cheap one that came with it. Reading 106. Yikes! A brand new thermo/hygrometer. Reading 100. A meat thermo reading 98. And expensive meat monitor with a probe. Reading 102. Hmm. I've put 3 of them in ice water and all read 32. So they gotta be close to accurate. My only thought is that the darn still are is probably that inconsistent/blotchy inside. I'm going back to sitting on my hands. !
