All of this hatching is so exciting....I was thinking yesterday how great it would be if chicken keeping got back to where it was pre WWII whre just about everyone had a few hens in their yard...even city folk. I think commercial egg farming would maybe become more humane if they were really competing with us.

Anyway enough random thoughts, I am trying to hatch some for my uncle and it is frustrating because right now I am in the collection stage and his hens are on strike. I got one great egg and I started collecting on Saturday. Weird because he has a young BO, two Golden Comets and an older RIR mix. Yesterday there were 0 eggs from them.

There was a second egg on Saturday but it was in a nest with a broken/pecked egg and it got some egg on the shell. Not sure I will try to hatch that one. What do you think?? I wouldn't want it to mess up the rest. but I am setting on Friday and was hoping for at least a half dozen. I guess I will wait and see.

Gonna worm them for him after I am done collecting eggs. Hopefully that will get things rolling again.

Meanwhile my own hens gave me 6 for 6 yesterday....can't wait to see if they hatch and what they will look like. The chicks will all be mixed breed and I am hoping for COLOR!

This is day 7 for me & I have 4 out of 9 olandsk dwarf eggs developing & 5 maybe 6 out of 12 blrw developing. 1 of the olandsk dwarf eggs has an air cell that is on the side closer to the small end than the big end so I am going to be worrying about it.

my first-time (both for her and for me!) broody girl, a Basque hen named Eleanor, is sitting on 10 eggs, as of saturday afternoon -- so looking forward to April 20 or 21? the eggs are 4 birchen marans, 4 swedish flower hens, and 2 SFH/cream legbar crosses. here's a picture of my determined girl!
