Araucana thread anyone?

I have one Araucana bred by a backyard breeder from a hatch of 23 chickens of all kinds of breeds - he had purchased the fertile eggs. He thought it might be a cross bred at the time he gave her (?) to me, but on looking in my chicken 'bible' ... !! I notice the breed does not have much of a tail. This one ( around 14 weeks old now ) has a magnificent upright tail but with no signs of curved roo feathers. HOWEVER, she is making some rather odd noises now - perhaps she just likes the sound of her own new voice, or perhaps she is in fact a he !! The sound is like a type of crowing with laryngitis ? I thought - with her perfect (?) Araucana head etc. that she might be in fact, a pure bred with 'cuckoo' colouring. Buff / beige sprinklings throughout feathers, but basically creamy white. I am a novice at keeping chickens, and would like some thoughts on all this. The photo I am ( hopefully ) posting here, does not show the colourings on her white feathers, and behind her is her best friend - my little silkie. Thanks.

cute chick. where are you located? outside the US? this bird looks like some Australia araucana's i've seen, but definitely not a US araucana. at any rate, i have a difficult time with top hat breeds in deciding sex. that said, if the bird is crowing, it's a rooster.

Just dropping in for a quick moment, in case anyone is curious to know, my patterned girl "Josephine" is dead, a predator finally got her after all these years of her insisting on being a wild, free, and loose hen. I did get three offspring from her though - One wheaten/duckwing/columbian looking pullet, one blue pullet, one blue cuckoo pullet, all bilaterally tufted. My silver duckwing hen went missing one day some weeks ago, so, I now have a population of 7 Araucanas. And no eggs laid in the last few weeks.

So all in all, it's not terrible here, but not superb either. I just hope to get plenty chicks this spring as well as enough eggs to offer to others.

I'm so sorry to hear about Josephine. She was quite the lady hen and so lovely. I hope her daughters will give you some Joesphine granddaughters to carry her lines on.

Both my Araucana and my Silkie ( Mindy and Moppitt ) are sounding the same now - don't know if they copy one another. Nothing would surprise me after seeing some of the antics all 5 young pullets get up to. The first 3 ( Welsummer, RIR, Barnevelder ) are older than the two white pullets, and are not too happy to have made their acquaintance, so there's 3 in one half the run, and 2 in the other !! When they are fully grown and ( hopefully ) laying - I will try to get them together again. Meantime, they can talk to one another through the separating wire ... !!

thanks for reply. Yes, I live in Australia ... and I don't think we have specifically the Ameraucana hens here ( not sure about that - maybe have for showing purposes ? ). Another post here mentioned both the silkie and araucana having similar sounding 'voices' ... and I noticed just last night that both were talking themselves silly with more a long croak than crowing. I hope neither of them is a rooster. Would have to return a rooster - don't want one at this stage. Only a backyard novice, and not into hatchings etc. They are only 14 weeks old at this time, so will wait a little to see if any real crowing occurs.
