I lost track of this thread some time ago, btu I really need to ask:

Are araucanas awful layers, or is it just my birds? I can't even save up enough eggs from 3 girls to incubate any. I'm getting like one egg a week! Between them!

Do your hens free range? My Araucana's are absolutely, by FAR the worst birds I have ever had about finding out of the way, impossible to get to places to lay their eggs. They may be hiding them from you? Then there is my Spook, who lays an egg where ever it happens to plop out of her body. No kidding. I was throwing scratch one day and she was waddling around just like a penguin till an egg popped out right there in the middle of the scratching chicken mob. She never missed a beat - just kept foraging. I find her eggs on the ground in the middle of the lawn, on the floor of the coop, on top of the feed bins, etc......

They're bantams. 2 of the girls I got a little over a month ago. I got 2 eggs, and that was it. The one I already had used to be in with a bunch of cochins and she'd lay on the floor and the eggs would get eaten. Just hers- nobody elses for some reason. Now that I have her in with the just the araucanas & a little roo- maybe I get 1 egg a week. WTH?

I just let them out to free range (the 2 new ones) for the first time yesterday. I figured a month in quarantine deserved a little break. The one I already had defected back to the cochin house

but at least now I can keep an eye on the 2 newer girls. I check the coops several times a day since it's been so hot. No place to hide them.
