Hi, I am new to the community as we just got two baby ISA browns and two white pekin ducks. All between one and two weeks old, they are currently inside under a heat lamp. they have a constant supply of water and are being feed Purina start and grow feed. Whenever the ducks eat they shake there heads very fast as if it is necessary to swallow. Is this normal? If not what might be wrong, what should I do?

ducks need water that they can submerge their heads in, in order to clear their nasal passages of food. Also, your pekins will be twice the size of your chicks by the end of the week and will need a seperate brooder.

Thank you!

Don’t worry! This is completely normal. As long as they have enough water and it is deep enough for them to fully submerge their beaks in they are completely fine. Ducks if all ages shake their heads a bit when they eat and it’s is rarely ever a sign of illness or of being injured. Ducklings especially shake their heads and even their whole bodies as they eat and even drink sometimes. They’re just very small and it helps for them to get their food down.
