Are people really this ignorant about chicken biology?

I thought libraries were for looking up things that you are interested in. I was not particulary interested in chickens, growing up in the inner city. Am I stupid because I was not an expert on their reproductive system?

I bet you were REALLY interested in human reproduction whether you grew up in the inner city or not. The point I was trying to make was that when you learn about one thing, it carries over into other things. Human ovulation and chicken ovulation are not that far apart. Back in the days before leash laws it was not uncommon to see dogs mating on the street. I suppose I'm not the only kid who figured out what was going on. Depending on how inner your inner city area was, there may have been people mating more or less in public. I grew up in a middle class beach community. I learned a lot by observing what tourists did under beach blankets when I was 10-14 years old.

I am not saying you were stupid, maybe unobservant, maybe focused on other things. But when a person grows up (and gets an RN certificate as in a previous post) and still hasn't figured things out, it does make you wonder.

Lizzy, I think we were posting at same time,
no it does not make you stupid. Remember what I said these were Nurses, we are suppose to know basic biology. I guess that's another forum. Here is my point, every school age kid should be taught this because a baby chick hatching is the basics of learning human biology. We all have eggs, papa roo sperminates mother hen baby develops in egg/womb and baby is hatched or human baby is born. The only difference is our egg stay in our body. Kudos to you teachers out there.

I think the basic issue here is that people don't carry what they know about human reproduction to chicken love.

The thing is, there is no way to know that it is all done the same way. Look at fish, sea horses, etc. It is reasonable to think that chickens might be different from humans.

I was not unobservant. I knew how dogs and humans mated - I wasn't born knowing that chickens work the same way.

I think sometimes people will grasp onto anything just to feel superior to others.

Wow, I never thought I would learn this much about chicken love! Sweet!

I am sorry...there is no way these people can be RN's.

If they really are RN's, please let me know what hospital they are at so I know to stay away from there.

I just have to make a post here.

I too work with RN's, and they are just astonished of all the chicken facts when I bring in the eggs for them. I guess they just never really thought about where eggs come from, how they are formed or fertilized. You should have seen the looks on their faces when I explain where the egg exits the hen. And invariably, one always asks, "don't you have to have a rooster to get eggs?"

And "don't eggs have to be in the refrigerator at all times?" I said just yesterday, "No, if you leave them out for three weeks at 100 deg. they become eggs with legs." That was a priceless look

They love my eggs though!

These are some pretty smart (in other areas) girls too. Most city folks just don't think about how food is produced, and how farmers feed this country and a few others. We BYCers are lucky, IMHO.

Hikerchick, I'm sorry I offended you. I didn't mean for you to take my comments personally (unless you were one of those RNs I referred to). We all have certain things that we are interested in and know about. I didn't mean for you to attack me because of your perception that I was felt superior to you. I know that we all don't know everything. That's why these message boards are so good for us all.
