Are these mites or lice?

Lice only live on the birds. Mites can live in the coop. Both completely gross me out, so I treat coop no matter what though. 😅
I know what you mean. I feel itchy just reading about these pests😣. Can't believe they have mites, but then don't know why I'm surprised. They are outdoors all day plus humid weather. And we live near wooded area. Two of my hens are broody so that might be where it started.

@Frazzled chicken tender sorry for the late reply, I've been a bit busy.
Here are the photos. I had not been checking their coops as well as I usually do, and so had not realized that they had come back.
If you have a wooden coop with cracks, please check them regularly everyone.
First pic is their hiding spot.

And now this is them, after I scrap them out, with my hand in it for a bit of scale.

After seeing this, I may just burn my coops down and build new ones. *shudders*

My plan is to clean it all out (already done) and dust Pyrethrum is all the cracks. (again already done) Then wait a few days, and then pressure wash it all down and dust with Pyrethrum again afterwards.
I think that should do the trick, with a follow up in a week or two.
(Do you know how long it takes for the eggs to hatch?)

1-2 days.

Oh ok!
I presumed it would be more like a week.

Do red roost mites stay on the birds in the day?
I thought they just lived in the coop, and come out at night, and go back in the morning to their hiding spots.
I believe those only feed on the birds at night.
