i'm just sayn', it will be a while before i get them. around late winter or early spring

Welsummers are beautiful birds but I'd add some Buff Orpingtons, some Australorps and some Easter Eggers just for variety.

i would say to start out with a mixed flock of just some hens. if you just want eggs for eating this would be good for the time being.

as you find the breed you seem to like, then look for a roo to add to that breed. preferably from a local breeder. getting the males from a hatchery may not be the way to go since many hatcheries do not always have good quality rare breeds that are up to standards or of sound temperament. some rare breeds that have 5 toes normally may have 6 or 4.

if there are any other chicken breeders/farmers in your area you might want to ask them what breeds they have and if any are considered rare and how well they have been doing in your area.

hey i could prob call myself a newbie i have only been doing the chicken thing for about a year now and i had a few breeds that i didnt like and quite frankly i killed..... i finally settled on something hardy and dependable.....i was like you and couldnt choose so i picked three i have barred rocks, new hampshire reds, and easter eggers. they are all very hardy things that i tried and failed that might help you is pure ameraucanas, cochins, and silkies. i hope that that helped you in your "quest" (lol) to find the right chicken breed!!!!
